When I picked up my dog (8 month old poodle) from the groomer, she (the groomer) mentioned that he was showing some discomfort in his eye. She advised that I should “keep an eye” as he may have had something wrong with his eye before he went to his appointment.
She also said that many of her clients have thanked her as after getting shampoo in their eye at their groom, they were made aware of a pre-existing problem in their dog’s eye. She then said that sometimes things do get in pups eyes during grooming.
Once back home his discomfort increased and he began pawing at his eye and rubbing it against the floor . About an hour after getting him home the eye was completely closed up.
We took him to the vet and they confirmed he had an ulcer from scratching his eye that needed treatment. This cost a couple of hundred ££. Treatment worked fine thank goodness and his eye healed up.
My question is does this happen often when people take their dogs to the groomer? I’m pretty sure he must have got hair or shampoo in his eye there which caused the problem - he was fine before the appointment. It ended up being a stressful and very expensive day for us all and I’m kind of nervous about taking him back.
I’m not saying it was the groomers fault, just wondering if it’s likely to happen again and any steps that can be taken to prevent it.
