We’re out at 6.30 for 45 mins, a quick 20 mins at lunch time and then again around 8.30pm. My pup won’t pee or pooh in the garden so while he in and out during the day he needs three proper toilet walks a day or I’m dealing with accidents in the house.

How old is your dog? Breed?

We are out by 9am , I’m retired though and they are frenchies who don’t need hours of exercise . That hour is the only walk of the day though as they have 7 acres to roam at home if they want

Jellycatspyjamas · 24/04/2025 21:28

@Bartg he’s a 1 year old cockerpoo so very full of beans.

I WFH and take mine out at lunchtime for an hour off lead, then he gets another shorter sniffy pavement walk in the evening - about 20 minutes.

Rainbowstripes · 24/04/2025 23:36

Mine gets one long walk a day (between 1-2 hours usually) but the time can hugely vary - he's a high energy working breed but we've done lots of work on being at home = chilling and because it's rarely first thing in the morning he's very happy having a chilled start.
I'm fortunate that he usually comes to work with me so even if his walk isn't until the evening he also won't have been home alone all day and will do bits of training/mooching around in-between my clients

My dog will get up whenever really, any time from 6-10 depending what time he had his last wee.

But if I need to leave early for work he has fifteen mins pottering/toilet break, then is happy to wait for his dog walker mid morning. I deliberately didn’t get him used to a long walk first thing as it’s just not possible some week days, and it’s worked out fine.

(He does get 2-3 hours a day, just not in the morning)

My border collies first walk is at 5:30am for about an hour. We go out again about 1pm for ball chasing, scent work and a long sniff walk. His last walk is around 7pm. Lasts about an hour.

the walk at 5.30 is that in the streets in the dark when it’s winter? Just wondering if I should try going to forest with torch or walk streets.

also do they do much between first walk and 1pm? I ask cos this routine sounds like it would fit for me

10.30 and again at 4.30. Two year old miniature poodle.

Gattopardo · 28/04/2025 22:54

I have a retriever and a full time job, but don’t achieve anywhere near these levels of excercise with my dog.

I mostly WFH but am frequently busy between 830 and 1130 so our walk is at lunchtime. Around an hour and 15 usually. Play in the garden after I’ve clocked off, very occasionally a second evening sniffy walk.

I don’t know whether I’m lucky my dog doesn’t need to go out out early doors, or if it is learned behaviour. Either way it works very well for us.

On my office days she gets 3-4 hours of running around with other dogs though.

LudvillasCave · 28/04/2025 22:57

Usually head out between 8.30 and 9.30 but can sometimes be earlier or a bit later depending on schedule. He’s a little terrier and never objects to going out earlier!

Gattopardo · 28/04/2025 22:59

Whilst I do think most dogs would love 3* walks a day, most people aren’t in a position to enable that and it certainly wouldn’t have been the norm for pet dog ownership over the years. There is definite value in teaching dogs, once past the puppy/teenage dickhead stage, that inside the home is a place for chilling out and relaxing. If you give them endless games and stimulation all day long, that is pretty much what they will expect.
