When did your 35 kg dog start slowing down?

Having a bit of a scare with my 9 yo. Not sure if he has rapidly aged recently or has an injury. Just have a pit in my stomach. Up until now we have taken my boy and his vitality very much for granted. Fingers crossed he has hurt himself and there is nothing else going on.

We have a 9 year old 40kg st Bernard cross collie. He has been walking with us all day and is absolutely knackered. We only do a big walk once or twice a week max. Most of the day he follows us around and sleeps at our feet or on my new sofa! He has never been all that lively, but he is definitely starting to slow down this past year.

My 38kg boy has just started slowing down noticably in the last two months at nearly 13. I'm not sure whether mine's got an injury or it's old age / arthritis which is making him slower. It's a shame, his mind and attitude is still puppy like.

i genuinely feel sick to my stomach

But what can you do other than love and cherish them to the fullest possible extent.

I think it really depends on the breed! My Goldies have all historically slow down by about 11 (35-45KG) but most have lived another 2-3 years.

What I would say is just because a dog is slowing down doesn’t mean it’s nearing the end. Just the same way a dog that is bouncing around is actually living a good life. It’s all about the individual dog.

Our dog started slowing down at about 10 (40kg).

Is he on any joint supplements? There are some fantastic ones out there that can really help them

He’s on YouMove advanced 360. Do you know if that’s one of the best ones?

My med size dog started slowing down at 10 but slowly at first and a bit more each year till 15. A sudden slowing down may indicate an injury or ailment. Sending your pooch best wishes.

If you want to stick with Yumove I would go up to their joint care max range. Means you’re getting a higher dose of everything.

Boswellis is often given to dogs with arthritis. I think you can get it from most health food places.

Bone broth has collagen in which is good for joints. It’s really easy and much cheaper to make it yourself, just google some recipes

My Toller (20kg so a bit smaller) started looking like an ‘old’ dog when he was 10 - I suspect the trauma we were all going through after dh’s unexpected sudden death had something to do with it as well as ageing. He started on Librela injections about a year ago (he’s now coming up to 12) and he’s back to bouncing around happily. He’s playing bitey face games with our 2 year old dog, swimming and running around. He gets tired on really long walks so we’ve reduced the amount of time we’re out but he’s had a new lease of life.

My ‘old’ girl started slowing down quite rapidly at 7 (she weighed 53kg though so a bit bigger). She died aged 8, which was considered ‘old for breed’ so she did well.

They leave the BIGGEST hole in our hearts when they go! 💖
