Immodium for dogs?

Hi,

My 9 year old dog had a dental last Friday and starting Sunday has had bad diarrhea (totally liquid with blood). He's been back to the vet who said no infection and thought the pain meds have badly upset his stomach so these were changed. However it's not got any better. Spoken to the vet again and aw a call back today at some point.

In himself, he's OK. Quite bright and still wanting to go for a walk when i take him up the road. He's not eating his usual softened biscuits but is having small meals of chicken and rice (the vet said not to starve him as apparently advice is different now).

My question is can dogs have immodium? I'll be asking the vet this but having looked online, it appears that dogs can have the normal human immodium tablets. As he doesn't have an infection, something to plug him up might be the way forward?? Selfishly speaking, I'm sick of clearing up endless poop puddles and coming down to a mess each morning

My dog was given buscopan by the vet (by injection in there, then just normal tablets like you buy OTC for giving at home), but after 4 days of diarrhoea, he really needs to be seen properly by the vet again as that's not good, especially in an older dog.

Thanks for the reply. He was seen Monday and then I rang Tuesday for further advice and the vet was just like 'it'll work out of his system' and was confident the probiotic would firm stuff up. When I speak to them I'll see if he wants to see him again and ask about the injection too.

My dog has recently recovered from ileus. She was put on a strict diet of dry roasted butternut squash and water poached white fish.

Cost me a flaming fortune!

She had ten days of that and medication, her stools were still loose after that so she was put on probiotics. Another week and I was able to introduce her normal food very slowly.

Have you tried prokolin paste? Have you fasted him at all for a reset. Might seem weird but an otherwise healthy dog can actually last weeks with no food just liquids. Not suggesting you don't feed for this long it was just to show 24 hours really won't hurt and could help. I'd also recommend poached white fish once he can eat. Little and often and let him drink the water too.

This, the paste is really good and works quickly ime, I wouldn't like to give my dog human medication like immodium

Check with your vet that the ingredients are ok, but I give my dogs Logic Firm Paste if the loose poos have been going on for more than a day or two. Especially if there’s nothing else concerning, like vomiting or they’re a bit lethargic. Some dogs are just very poopy!

A lot of dogs are intolerant to chicken, so that might not be helping. White fish and sweet potato is gentler on their stomachs.
I also used to give FortiFlora for a few days to help with gut recovery.
I hope your dog feels better soon.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I'll try and get some prokolin paste and will get some fish too. The vet called and could only offer me an appt for tmrw. She said no to the injection of buscapen and would probably go down the antibiotics route, but wants to see him first.
I really want to fast him for a day or two if only to save the scrubbing 😷, but other vet was very much saying continue feeding. Silver lining is it's been nice weather so I've been able to plonk him in the garden in his bed most of the last few days!
