Incontinence in dogs

Hi

We have a 3 year old westie who is great. However the last few weeks she has started weeing when shes asleep. It could be any time of the day but always when she is asleep lying down. For example she will be asleep on the sofa and then she will get up suddenly and it's wet. Sometimes it's just a dribble and sometimes its more. She never wees when she is awake always asks to go out. I think she realises after coz she moves. She has been spayed.

She is due to see the vet in May for her Vacs so will get the vet to check her over and ask about it then but I guess I wondering is she just super chilled and doesn't wanna move or is something not right? Has anyone else had something similar with their female dogs?

Thanks in advance :-)

Apparently quite common in spayed bitches. Mine has had this problem for years but a combination of hormone implants and propalin syrup keeps it under control.

We had a lovely girl that this happened to as well. We rescued here from a building site so assumed maybe there had been some damage to cause the incontinence...but maybe she was just unable to wake with the urge, I don’t know! The vet prescribed hormones. Honestly, didn’t really help. Just had to make accommodations for her wetting herself in her sleep. Lots of laundry, not easy at all.

The major thing to look out for is if she’s peeing and sleeping in it. It can cause nasty sores etc so she’ll need to be kept really clean.

Hope you find a solution OP x

Mine has incontinence similar to what you describe - also a Westie. She's on a drug called Incurin and it totally solves the problem.

Same with @Eyesopenwideawake , my 11 year old girl has been on Propalin syrup for years. Fantastic stuff and pretty cheap too.

Thank you all for replying, I will definitely talk to the vet. Did u find that it wasn't all the time? Like today we've had no incidents so far and she was dry over night? So it's not every time she sleeps?

Yes, definitely @Doggiejamz . Never overnight or when we were out and the dogs were left at home, always in the evening when she was in a really deep sleep. Usually on the settee on one of my fancy cushions 🙄.

It still happens to her very occasionally, like once every 3 months, but tbh I tend to wake her up and take her out for a pee at about 10.30pm now (we don't go to bed until about 1am, and she'll have another pee before bedtime).

Doggiejamz · 10/04/2025 17:58

Ohhh sounds excatly like her! She never seems to do it when she is left in the day and doesnt seem to be wet overnight, mostly like you say, it seems to be in the evenings when shes on the sofa with us, she has had it happen a few times when she's been sound asleep on the footstall/rug. It's definitely when she's in a deep relaxed sleep. I thought she was just being a bit lazy but she jumps up quickly and starts licking there straight away and seems genuinely surprised it's happened that it must be something medical.

Was the vet happy to just start her on medication or did you have to have all sorts of scans and stuff? I'd be happy to just give her the meds and see if it makes a difference bearing in mind she's only 3 and has no other health complaints and regular check ups at the vet. Thanks for all your advice 😊

Bless her, I always feel so sorry for my girl when it happens, she's such a clean little soul. Incidentally, I always give her a good clean when it's happened to her, I'm always worried about her getting urine burns (I'm sure you do that too of course!).

She started this about 8 years ago. I took in a urine sample to the vet then and explained exactly what was happening, he was happy to prescribe Propalin straight away - she didn't need any other scans or investigations.

It's been a game changer for her, I'm really happy with it. She gets a check up every 6 months (they need that for all prescriptions) and I also take in a urine sample with me at that time too. I don't think that's really required and I've never had any issues raised from the sample, but I just like to get it checked out.

Doggiejamz · 10/04/2025 21:58

At first I was so surprised because the same as your little pooch she's always been so clean, I honestly thought oh she's having an off day but as it's gone on I realised she's just as surprised each and every time it happens. She definitely doesn't realise. Yes same I always wash her after as I don't want her getting sore.

Ohhh yes good point I'll take a urine sample with me when I take her. Save going back and too. I'm so pleased it's helped your little dog too, it's not nice for them at all. X

One useful thing I just learned last week @Doggiejamz is that you should refrigerate the urine sample ASAP(ee!) before you hand it in to the vet, otherwise it can really affect the test results.

You might already know that of course, but I didn't, despite having dogs for an embarrassing amount of years!

Hope she gets sorted out. X

My 3 year old has just started doing this, every Sunday for the last three weeks Confused
Always after some excitement or playing, and in her sleep. On bed or sofa.
was wondering if she had a UTI

Doggiejamz · 10/04/2025 22:49

Ah thanks @CarrieMoonbeams I did not know that! I'm hoping getting a sample will be easy 😂

@fantom

My little dog has always done little excited wees when we come home and she greets us we just get her straight outside, her incontinence is quite random, like today nothing but when it does happen its always when she's in deeper sleep often on the sofa in the evenings. The other posters have been super helpful so I'd definitely follow their advice and speak to your vet xx

Just thought I would provide an update just incase anyone reads this in the future, it always annoys me when you don't find out what happened! The vet was great and found on testing she did have a slight UTI, she prescribed some antibiotics and that was fine however she was still leaking. Another trip to the vets and another wee sample which was clear, we have now been prescribed Propalin. So far so good she's been dry. Fx it continues 😊 She seems happier and seems to be washing herself less.

Thank you to everyone who gave advice it's much appreciated :-)

Thanks for the update @Doggiejamz , I'm really happy to hear that the Propalin is working for her too, it really is good stuff x
