Dog needs a wee at 4.30/5am 😭

Every blooming morning. We are shattered. He’s been with us approx 6 months and is about 2. He’s fed about 5.30/6pm and has a walk after. Goes in the garden at 10pm for last wee then bed. How on earth can we get him to cross his legs for just a bit longer in the mornings? 6-6.30 I can cope with but pre-5 is a killer. We take him out in lead, no playing just toilet and back to bed, where he then sleeps til 7 or 8. Any ideas?

Is he a little breed ? I say that as any big dog I’ve ever had has had a bladder like a camel , my current boy can easily go 10 hours and had to be encouraged to go for a wee.
Having said that average time a dog can hold it is 6/8 hours so he is within normal range.

Maybe your vet can advise ?

Can you leave his last wee until midnight or as late as you can stay awake for?

He is a Jack Russell/daxie sort of mix up (rescue) so yes small. But my old jrt was def more camel and stayed in bed til lunchtime! This is a shock to the system

We are so bloody tired we go to bed at 10, it’s a vicious cycle!

Mine’s the same and he’s also 2 but he’s large so not sure about the big dog theory! The only time he doesn’t do it is when he’s been absolutely worn out the evening before from a long walk.

BeyondMyWits · 08/04/2025 17:16

Ours (westie) is the same, but he's getting old. It wears a bit thin when he wants a wee at 5 and wants to "get up" at 6:20, when for over 13 years he's been 7am on the dot.
The light makes a difference, and the dawn chorus. Here's hoping it doesn't get any earlier.

UpToonGirl · 08/04/2025 17:18

Is he definitely weeing when you let him out in the garden for his last wee? Mine won't wee in the garden, unless he's desperate so I have to take him for a quick walk up the street at 10pm.

chattyness · 08/04/2025 17:19

So what happens if you don't take him out does pee in the house ,perhaps you can just try and settle him down for a bit to help train him to wait a bit longer. He maybe just wants a cuddle. I know how tiring it is as my boy did this for a while, but he just needed a cuddle and a cover up because he was a bit cold.

Deanthebean · 08/04/2025 17:20

Can't you let him cock his leg up a few times in the garden? Or even let him have a bit longer in the garden?
Or you are going to need to push his last wee back

CraftyGin · 08/04/2025 17:35

Dogs can't tell the time by the clock. They can tell the time by the sun, however.

It's a bit like having a baby.

We have a cat-flap (have done for years) and our cockerpoo fits through and can do his morning wants before coming back in to sleep until 9am.

AcquadiP · 08/04/2025 17:37

Feed him earlier in the day.

faerietales · 08/04/2025 17:59

I assume someone is supervising him and making sure he pees and poos?

You could also try taking him out for a walk instead to stimulate the bowels.

WinterNightStars · 08/04/2025 18:34

It’s exhausting…we have an elderly dog (13) who needs a wee every night too. We alternate who gets up between me & DH so at least one of us gets a decent sleep.

user2848502016 · 08/04/2025 19:00

Seeing as he’s little could you train him to use a litter tray?

Birdbrained13 · 08/04/2025 20:11

To answer some questions - yes he def pees (& poos) in the garden. We take him on the lead at night otherwise he acts the goat running around and barking. He gets 3 walks per day - morning and eve about 20 mins each and then at least an hour if not more at midday ish. He always pees when he goes out and sometimes poos too. We tried bringing dinner forward and back but it didn’t make much difference and my other dog likes 5.30 (in built clock!) he sleeps on our bed so we’ve tried cuddling him but he def wants a wee

I’ve got a medium sized terrier and we have a dog door.

faerietales · 08/04/2025 20:14

Dachshunds are known for being pretty difficult to toilet train unfortunately, and 10pm-5.30am is 7.5 hours which is a long time for such a small breed. I think one of you needs to stay up later and let him out at midnight.

MoneyBall1 · 08/04/2025 21:08

Has he always been this way? Our dog started doing this and it turned out he had some sort of irritation in his bladder (they found something in his urine) that cleared up on its own eventually. Once it cleared up he went back to 630am wees!
