Red sore skin

Hi,

My poor dog has suddenly flared up with this red sore skin today. I've managed to get a vet appointment for tomorrow morning, but its annoying him now... does anyone know what it could be, or anything I can do to ease it a bit for him tonight before I get in to the vet tomorrow?

There's been no change in his routine or diet, nothing new used in the house, he's up to date with his flea and worming medication, and had no signs of itchiness or irritation before today.

Not off his food or anything. Don't want to take him out for his walk as I'm afraid his harness might annoy it - the sore bit goes up his armpit onto his chest a bit - not as severe as what you can see on his leg though

I am not sure what this is but one of my previous dogs used to be very prone to "hot spots" (pyoderma). These suddenly pop up (can happen in an hour or two from nothing) and drive the dog mad with itchiness, they can't stop biting and scratching them. If it is this, you MUST stop your dog being able to lick, bite or scratch the area (use a collar of shame if necessary). They can bite through their full skin thickness in a very short time, which won't help. It may be something quite different, of course, as it doesn't look exactly the same. If it does turn out to be a hot spot, the only way to deal with them I found is get them to a vet for the area to be shaved as soon as possible. The vet will clean it up and advise but the only thing that worked on my dog was to clean it regularly (Hibiscrub is best for this), then treat it with an ointment (vet prescription needed for this) called Isaderm. My dog's hot spots used to take 3 or more weeks to finally go and she had to wear a cone until they completely stopped being itchy. The sooner you get them started on treatment the better.

Thank you so much - my sister is heading to pets at home for me to get a cone until I can see the vet. I've just cleaned it with plain water for now as I'm afraid of anything on it that might make it worse. Going to have a Google on hot spots. Thank you!

I’ve just recommended this on another thread so I’ll copy what I said there.

Leucillin Natural Antiseptic spray

It’s great for itchy paws or skin rashes or small cuts and grazes. It’s completely safe to use on them, won’t hurt them if they lick it and doesn’t harm the environment either. It smells of chlorine when you first spray it on but as soon as it’s dry it doesn’t smell of anything. And it doesn’t get all over the carpet unlike Sudocrem! Wonderful stuff.

I know you need something now, but it’s really handy to get some to keep in the cupboard for anything like this.

Thank you, I'll order some of that in to have in the house!

Oh good! I hope it helps to calm it down for him. Please don’t be put off by the smell when you first put it on, honestly it doesn’t smell at all once it’s dry. Just try not to let him lick it off before it’s dries. Let us know how he gets on x

Piriton (chlorophenamine maleate )antihistamine. You will have to get it from the pharmacy counter. Don’t try piriteze or any others,. It is good for calming the itch.

Vet reckons he's had a cut or graze that's got infected and then the poor critter has just made it worse by being a typical dog and picking at it and licking it. Got an injection while we were in and tablets to start tomorrow at home for a week, so at least that's him sorted! He was miserable all last and looking very sorry for himself today. Hopefully the meds kick in quick
