Jack Russell’s breeders?

Tatemoderndrawyourown · 22/03/2025 09:19

Hello,

having looked at the various rescues around us and listened to the comments here, I think it would be best for us to get a Jack Russell from a breeder.
i am very unhappy about the idea of buying a dog but hey ho, I can live with that. What I can’t live with is buying from a rogue breeder. I’ve landed on House of jacks. Does anyone have any reviews on them, or can suggest a better place? We live in London and are happy to travel.
Thank you

How have you landed on House of Jack's (not a dig)?

From their website, it looks like they are focusing too much on producing non-standard dogs (blue, lilac, chocolate etc) rather than focusing on temperament... I wouldn't choose a breeder like that personally.

Best bet would be to Google KC registered breeders... Champdogs.com would have a full list of breeders.

Can't recommend a breeder but perhaps don't rule out parson terriers... Great little dogs (I have one) and very similar to JR.

Thank you. They seem prominent so checked them out but didn’t pick on what you commented on so thanks for flagging that up.
There are so many options on champ dogs that I don’t know how to select! Thanks for the suggestion of the parsons terriers, will definitely read up on them.

House of Jacks are a well known puppy farm. Someone posted about them ages ago, and lots of posters said the same thing. Just because someone is well known does not make them good.

Rule of thumb; snazzy website and lots of bitches = puppy farmer.

Use the KC website and cross check with Champ Dogs. Speak to breeders. Be prepared to put in significant effort - we’re talking weeks or months of research to find a good breeder.

tattychicken · 22/03/2025 11:14

Draytogo Parson Russell Terriers have a good rep. I know a couple of people who have pups from them and they were very happy with the breeder. Worth a look.

tattychicken · 22/03/2025 11:17

But with any decent breeder, you will most probably have to wait. People put their name down for a pup before the bitch is mated, so any litter "on the ground" is unlikely to have pups available to buy.

Tatemoderndrawyourown · 22/03/2025 11:21

Excellent, thank you all. I want to do the right thing so any information is really gratefully accepted. We don’t mind waiting, I definitely don’t want a dog from a farm, unless I can adopt the mums!

That's why you shouldn't listen to everything you read on MN

Tatemoderndrawyourown · 22/03/2025 11:40

why?

  • don't get a foreign dog - there's a flood of charities specialising on them, even dogsblog is chock full of them. I am sick of looking at potential dogs and then you open the page and they are currently in Romania or Cyprus
  • it's hard to train them once they are set in their ways
  • not all dogs will suit our family so the pool is already restricted
  • many don't give dogs to families with children younger than... so it does not work for us
  • we have a cat so all the 'no cats' dogs don't work for us
  • all the 'would suit a family with another dog' don't work for us

can't think of more reasons now but these are plenty already. Please let me know where I am going wrong, I always only had rescues but that was in another country, where it was easier to help a doggie out.

OP posts:
tattychicken · 22/03/2025 11:48

All valid reasons! A rescue isn't always a realistic option.

Though this place sometimes has youngsters/pups which may be suitable.

tattychicken · 22/03/2025 11:50

Their website is crap BTW. Their FB page is busy though.

redboxer321 · 22/03/2025 12:00

I agree it would be difficult, even more so if you have young children. Not impossible though, especially if you are willing to consider other breeds.
Adopting from abroad wouldn't necessarily put me off either although you do have to be careful and do your research thoroughly.
It's up to you obviously and you asked for JR breeders and I can't help you there sorry.

Justwingingit2005 · 22/03/2025 13:06

We rescued a parson terrier last year, which is a type of JR.
He was abused and had a history of cruelty. He has been the best dog ever. Yes he was scared and needed to gain our trust but he gives so much love.
Rescue one and show the little dog love they may never have had.

Tatemoderndrawyourown · 22/03/2025 16:42

Im all for rescuing! Doesn’t even have to be a terrier! I need a mix-size, intelligent dog that someone will allow me to get. The current cat has all sorts of health issues that no one wanted, for me, the worse off the better, more love to give both ways. I just don’t seem to be able to get one. I’ll keep looking, but it’s good to know where to look, and especially not to look.

Jack Russell terriers have only fairly recently become Kennel Club registered. Prior to 2016 they were a type with many variations. I have owned Jack Russells for many years and the pedigree ones at Crufts etc are not typical of the ones you see out and about. I have always found mine from dogs bred on farms or rescues. Fabulous little dogs!

Tatemoderndrawyourown · 24/03/2025 19:23

So what do we think about these ones??

tattychicken · 24/03/2025 19:48

I think they look gorgeous!! Only caveat would be that the rescue says they take in Romanian rescues, so I would want to know if the pups are UK based/born or Romanian. Just more about the background, where were they born, were they raised by their Mum etc.

They are lovely, and really sweet.

Tatemoderndrawyourown · 24/03/2025 19:51

Ah yes, thank you for that, I hadn’t noticed!

Arran2024 · 24/03/2025 19:54

I have a different breed but anyway when looking for a pup we always went to the breed shows and met breeders that way. If they like you, they will put you on their list. They tend to charge about half of what commercial breeders charge as they are mainly offloading the pups they don't want to keep for showing. There will be Jack Russell breed clubs and you cam join them and get details of breeders that way too.

This.
People who had had JRTs for years fought hard to keep them out of the KC. A proper JRT is a feisty little dog with a lot of prey drive.

Ours came from a local farm where are parents ratted round the barns. If I were to get one again, I'd not want a KC one.

tattychicken · 25/03/2025 11:41

Yes I agree. Mine is from the DC of the local Pony Club who has bred a litter every few years for about 40 years.
Though my bitch seems to have unfortunately missed out on the ratting genes.

Spanador · 25/03/2025 11:54

I know you've taken on what others have said OP, but for anyone else who comes across them, definitely stay away from House Of Jacks. She's 100% a puppy farm, all she cares about is breeding unusual colours and selling for as much money as possible. She's also been in prison for money laundering and running a brothel, which says a lot about her

Tatemoderndrawyourown · 25/03/2025 20:10

Thank you Spanador, I firmly believe that you can’t define yourself as a dog lover and buy from a puppy farm. It’s important that people know who does what (let alone the other lovely things you mentioned she’s been charged with…)

OP posts:
Glitchymn1 · 25/03/2025 20:18

I’ve read house of jacks is a puppy farm too.

Why do you want a JRT OP, have you got children?

My parents had a JRT, he bit us all. We had rules around him, no kissing him, slippers in the house as he bit your feet, no visitors. We kept him until old age /dementia but my god- I wouldn’t touch one with a barge pole. He was loved, never hit, calm household, exercised and well fed, loved the cat! But a complete psycho!
