Anxious Springer Spaniel at night

my springer Molly age 6 has always slept on the end of the bed, when lights go out she settled and didn’t really move until morning came, just recently she caught
Gastroenteritis (now treated after antibiotics) but before we realised she had it she ran downstairs in the night and didn’t make it outside and pooed on the hall floor. We didn’t shout at her or anything just took her out and cleaned up after her but now every night around 1am if her stomach gurgles she tries to climb on us and pat us with her paws and then paces round the bedroom. We’ve tried taking her outside on the garden and even walking her round our village in case she does need the toilet but she doesn’t go. She was treated with amoxicillin twice per day, and I’m wondering if this is a side effect but she had her last tablet yesterday morning and she was just as bad last night. Don’t want to make her sleep downstairs but the lack of sleep is awful for me and my husband. Any ideas or help would be much appreciated

As it's the same time every night I'd guess that it's a pain in her stomach as the food passes through. Firstly I'd check with your vet then I'd do some research on probiotics for dogs. My friend had similar issues with their dog after major opp and long term antibiotics. They ended up with probiotics and feeding Chappie at the vets recommendation. However I wouldn't do anything without talking to the vet. In the meantime take it in turns to let her out at night then go back to bed. Hope it settles soon.

You could try giving her something for the tummy gurgles.
Clay, charcoal, a digestion aid (Hilton Herbs do a good one) something like that.
That would hopefully stop the gurgles and means she's not in discomfort which means she doesn't get anxious and sleeps straight through.
It might help break the cycle she seems to have gotten into.
If the tummy gurgles are really bad, you could try a Buscopan. My vet suggested it and it does but no more than the clay. Check it out with your vet first but it's another option.
Good luck.

It could still be a side effect of the antibiotics, it takes a few days for them to leave the system I believe.

Thanks Cadenza, I’ve been researching probiotics this morning and she’s got a vet check up appointment today so I’ll have a chat with her. Hopefully once the amoxicillin leaves her system it will help.

Fingers crossed, it’s a nightmare with the broken sleep. I feel like I’ve got a new baby

Thank you for the recommendations, I’ll read it up which is best
