French Bulldog x Lab

Does anyone have a Lab x Frenchie cross, or have experience of them? I know they’re need and temperament is very much decided by the dominant parent, but I’m trying to find out more about them generally. I have researched the separate breeds individually, but there’s not much around about this mix.

(there is a litter from a local rescue who are up for adoption and we are interested).

I wouldn't want to take on any kind of Frenchie mix due to their horrendous health issues.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 24/02/2025 17:12

I wouldn't even consider a frenchie, mix or not

LandSharksAnonymous · 24/02/2025 17:17

Worst case scenario - you get a dog with the energy of a labrador and the health issues (i.e. inability to breathe) of a pug (which means you can't exercise it properly and the dog and you will be utterly miserable).

FYI, puppies temperament are determined by a whole swathe of criteria - parents temperaments are but a small part of this (and 'dominant parent' is just nonsense) - including, but not limited to, nurturing environment, start to life, their individual personalities (just as two siblings can be different, so can two pups in a litter), their intelligence, their drive, their desires/motivation (food, etc) and, above all, their 'fear' reaction.

You'd be insane to go there. There's a reason that entire litter has been dumped at a rescue - because it's a really foolish mix that's asking for trouble. The breeder couldn't sell them so they dumped them. Ask yourself why.

Thanks for talking some sense into me!

It’s a shame because the puppies are here and it’s not their fault but imagine the start to life they’ll have had with an owner who allowed a French bulldog to get impregnated by a lab! Or the other way round I guess but I don’t know how that would even work!

Yes apparently it’s a Frenchie mum. She must have had a c-section. hoping she’s recovered well.

How in the heck could they even mate? Am guessing in the seedy world of dog breeding it was either artificial insemination or the frenchie was either held up or in some sort of contraption?

Toastandmarmiteplease · 24/02/2025 18:48

I can't imagine what that mix looks like?

The look like flat coated small black labs. The face isn’t flat but the nose is a littler shorter. Other than that there doesn’t seem to be much difference.

Frenchies are so cute but all of the flat faced dogs and cats (pugs, Persian etc) are unethical- they can't breathe properly the poor things.

Yes I agree. I just got carried away! These pups don’t have the full franchise flat face either, but theres so many other health issues to consider potentially as well.

It doesn't smack of responsible breeding really, does it?

No absolutely not. Which is probably one reason why they’re in a rescue now.

Could you get a health check before ruling it out?
Mixed breeds might be healthier?

If they’re in a rescue, I’d be inclined to go for it.

Are these from the mum that was dumped in Rugby? X

It is very sad.

Newuser75 · 24/02/2025 20:14

I'd be wary due to them being part Frenchie as they just are disastrous in terms of health unfortunately.

However, they are little puppies at a rescue centre needing homes so if you are drawn to them then nothing to stop you as you aren't supporting unethical breeding. They could be as a result of an accidental mating. You just don't know.

If you do proceed then go in with your eyes open regarding health issues and get good insurance!!

Poor thing! I’m sure my lab was the size of a French bulldog when we brought him home as a puppy 🙁.

I was just trying to put one through an insurance comparison site.

not sure if they would count as crossbreed or mongrel. I wouldn’t want to underestimate the insurance level needed for the Frenchie part!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 24/02/2025 21:53

Personally I wouldn't write them off and I'm not a frenchie fan at all.

It would be worth meeting them, ideally you'd get a the friendly personality of both breeds without the health problems of pure bred frenchies.

YourWinter · 24/02/2025 21:55

Can you really not see what a bad idea that would be? From what you know already, a bitch from a notoriously unhealthy breed has had a litter sired by a Labrador, not only a dangerous size physically, but such totally different instincts the puppies are going to have screwed up brains before they’re past initial babyhood. The owner of the bitch was stupid enough to allow this to happen, they’ll surely be too stupid to have put health at the forefront of any other decisions.

Poor puppies. Poor mum. But don’t make it your problem.

Ineedanewsofa · 24/02/2025 22:06

To go completely against the grain - our 17 week old puppy is a mongrel, Frenchie mum, Cavapoo dad. She is a healthy, boisterous puppy with no health issues and a surprisingly long nose and tail. She actually looks a lot like a Pattidale terrier.
Vet is super happy with her heart, lungs and breathing. If the pups are rescue then they should be thoroughly healthy checked so you should know what you are taking on @ladyworm but Frenchie doesn’t always mean problems

Newuser75 · 25/02/2025 01:16

@ladyworm id say crossbreed.
To be a crossbreed would be a single cross and a mongrel, several crosses.

Just how I would see it!

skintbuthappyish · 25/02/2025 01:45

I have a Frenchie, please do not get one. The breed should be banned, it's awful to watch my dog have all of his health problems and no insurance company will cover me
