6 month Cockapoo - unhealthy looking poo with blood (warning: image attached)

Hi all, my dog walker has sent this to me at work. I've already arranged a vet appointment for this afternoon.

In the meantime, does anyone have any ideas? Her poo didn't look like this 2 days ago. Yesterday, my DH took her for a walk. He didn't mention anything, so I'm assuming she was fine. She seems fine in herself if not a little quiet.

Thank you in advance.

Hi. Looks like the dog has colitis. My poodle had a bad bout of this a few years back. Vet gave her probiotics if I remember correctly and suggested and bland diet of chicken and rice (which is old style advice by the way) but actually I worked out she was allergic to chicken. I've now removed all chicken and other poultry from her diet and never had another episode of this.

Thank you so much for responding. Will the vet be able to test for any intolerances or allergies? Sorry, she's my first dog and I'm so worried.
She doesn't complain or whine at all with discomfort, but perhaps that's because she's used to it? She also eats a lot of chicken!

My dog poos like this (and worse) after eating chicken. She just seems to be intolerant to chicken - keeping her off that she is fine. It took two or three weeks to get back to OK once we worked it out - the odd time she's had some by mistake since it gets better v quickly.

So I would guess some kind of intolerance or irritant. But definitely check with Vet.

(Also - Vet was less alarmed by the mucousy blood than I was at the time! Ie it was something of concern but not an immediate emergency )

No the vet didn't even suggest a chicken allergy. But after a few weeks of bright yellow poo and some research I worked it out. Other dog owners, especially of poodles, also suggested chicken as the culprit. When I mentioned it to the vet later he did say chicken intolerance is common in dogs. My dog was also well in herself and showed no other symptoms.

Also vet didn't offer up any tests.

Honestly I think we have your answer so remove the chicken and maybe ask the vet for the probiotics to settle her system.

Then really check all the food you give the dog. Soooooo much has some form of chicken in.

Any tests will cost so I'd take a firm punt we are right here.

As a one off, this wouldn't worry me. If it starts becoming regular or you spot a pattern, then it might be worth getting a stool sample to the vets.

Our dog had colitis recently, lots of very bloody poos over the course of a few hours , vet prescribed antibiotics and probiotics cleared up very quickly
