Dog wants to sleep on our bed- crying

Hi lovely dog owners, I'm hoping you have some advise.

We have been letting our dog sleep at the end of the bed for about a year. Started off when DH was away with work and I don't mind dog sleeping at the end of the bed. We were then successful in training him to sleep on an armchair in our room by way of dog biscuits and it worked for a few months. Jumping on the bed for a nap in the day. The last two weeks, dog starts off on the chair, but now whimpers at about 3am. Whimpers so much it wakes us both. We ended up tapping the bed and he falls asleep once jumped on. At least it's peaceful. Any advice? Should we go for him sleeping downstairs? Should we try something else. One thing is he doesn't just jump on at night- he waits for us to say OK and tap the bed.
Not sure what to do next?

Those of you with the dogs in the bed every night, when do you manage to have sex because I know mine would try to join in and who wants to have sex with a dog watching them?

Well they wouldn’t be allowed in the bedroom until we were ready to sleep.

Hmm, I'll look at another dog bed. It's a sofa chez long thing so plenty of room. I truly believe it's because he wants to be with us. Feel us. He starts off perfectly well on his own- it's just at 3am ish. I'll look into another bed. Maybe cover him or put a blanket down. Maybe a pillow??

Yes a pillow works well for my boy and a soft toy to snuggle, too with a fleece blanket to cover & keep him warm while it still cold at night. As you've got wood floors maybe a rug underneath it will help keep the cold away.

Yes I'm a big sappy softie dog mum who babies her furson , but I don't care what anyone thinks , we're all happy 😎

Your wooden floor will get freezing cold during the night. That's why he's not getting down from the chair. I think he's probably also getting cold at that time and possibly stiff from being curled up.
Let him sleep on the bed, you'll be used to sleeping around him in no time at all.

Haha 😂

We never have dogs sleeping in our room as a rule, but one year took the dog away to a cottage and she was unsettled downstairs so we put her bed in the corner of our room.

Decided to have a (quiet as possible) bit of love and a few minutes later spotted the dog's eyes glaring at me from the side of of the bed. Killed the mood right off 😂

This might be a very unpopular idea, but we bought a second hand wooden cot, took off one side ( that goes up and down ) and raised the mattress to be the same height as our bed. It rests against the end of the bed and our Labrador sleeps in it as it’s technically at the end if the bed but not in our bed, but she’s safe and won’t fall out. Works really well (if you have the space.) no we will not use it for babies afterwards!!

This is inspired . Our dog always stayed on the bed until about midnight and then slept on a huge dog bed in the bedroom .

Okay- so last night I gave him a pillow and wrapped his blanket well around him. Slept there all night. Let's try again tonight. Thanks for the tips

That sounds like a cosy plan. Hope you all get good sleep tonight.

our dog slept on our bed for years and then about 2 years ago I noticed he would get onto a pillow. I figured his bones were older and sorer (he is 15 today!) so I bought him a state of the art orthopaedic fluffy bed for the floor next to our bed and he loves it. Our bed was too hard for him. He still comes up for a chat in the morning.

Hollyhedge · 10/02/2025 23:09

Tricky. Keep telling him no and keep him off the bed. I have realised with my dog they need complete consistency. If you let them up then they will always push it. My dog sleeps on my bed but little border. Two of you and a lab would be hard!

MrsDThaskala · 11/02/2025 10:41

Nope! Last night he was whimpering again. Did the same as the night before. I'm worried about splashing out on a new dog bed and then he doesn't use it.

I know I'm going to get piled on by all the crazy dog people on here, but seriously wtf am I reading?! You buy expensive blankets and tuck your dogs in at night? And aren't your beds really smelly if your big dogs sleep on there?
I don't understand why all these dogs are so soft and can't sleep on beds on floors. Our collie would happily sleep outside if she was allowed, I'd love that see her face if I tried to wrap her up in a blanket.

We got a bigger bed specifically to accommodate this scenario

So did we! We've now got a superking and lab sleeps either in the middle or at the end

I would get one of thearge mattresses-y dog beds and train him to sleep on that. More room to spread out. You could get one with sides for warmth. If you sit on it a lot when you get it, it will pick up your scent too.

Totally understandable but I would try anything to make my dog happy especially at night time when they can feel cold and more anxious /lonely. If you get him a big comfy mattress that he can really stretch out on, pillow & maybe a jumper you've worn to snuggle in to & cover him up, it might do the trick after a few nights. If he wakes & cries, check he's covered up and gentle stroke him until he 's settled again. It's just sleep training, he'll get it eventually and when he does you'll all get better a night's sleep as well .
