Tuffies dog beds for Labrador - worth it?

Are Tuffies Duranest dog beds worth the investment?

We usually get our Labrador a bed in Aldi or Lidl when on offer.

But I feel like we are throwing out beds every few months. Feels wasteful and a friend recommended the Tuffies Duranest.

The price is obviously a lot more than I am used to paying.... are these worth 10x an Aldi bed?!

A large Duranest is about £200 vs Aldi £20 or so.

Will a Duranest last at least 2 years?!

The Aldi ones just fall apart after a while. Don't survive washing rather than being chewed to pieces.....

I have a bed that looks like a Scuffs Chester for my labrador. I can't recall the exact make but will look it up tomorrow. He was a rescue and it came with him. Still going strong two years later. It is too big for the washing machine so I have to de-hair it and go to the laundrette and it takes ages to dry, so I use a carpet cleaner machine on it in between.

Here he is in it with his friend.

Tuffies beds are amazing! They last forever and so easy to clean. Definitely worth it!

muddyford · 27/01/2025 06:22

My Lab has a Ruff and Tumble bolster bed with a washable cover. It's absolutely brilliant and worth the money.

HappiestSleeping · 27/01/2025 06:40

That's the main thing I hate about the one I have. There is a detachable cushion in the base part that can be washed easily, but the cover doesn't come off the main part so the whole thing has to go in. The carpet cleaner has helped a great deal.

ZimbleFox · 27/01/2025 06:56

My labs hate the noise they make when getting in so refused to do it.

EdithStourton · 27/01/2025 08:20

Like you we were going through beds very quickly. Bit the bullet and got Tuffies and they are amazing. Our Tuffies mattress is 7 years old and is only just showing signs of wear. You can hose them down, and the covers are easy to wash and last well (we have two on the go at any time and are onto our second pair. In seven years).

I would 100% buy another.

My lab has a basket. It's lasted 5 years.

Something like this with a washable pillow inside:

I think it must be us but we could not get the Tuffie beds clean enough.

Yes you can wash the cover and you can power wash the rest of it but the smell gets into the mattress etc and it will smell of dog over time. At least ours did. Could be I have very smell dogs though!

What am I doing wrong?

Notgivenuphope · 27/01/2025 13:31

Our lab has a Wainwright bed from pets at home. He loves it. In fact he has two, one for my house and one for my mum's. Has lasted a long time too and are washable.

fivepies · 27/01/2025 13:32

We love our Tufties beds. They last for years and years. The covers are really durable and easy to wash. We have the flat mattresses with covers and unlike the PP, they don't smell at all.

Accepting that dogs smell of dogs?

My 4 year old lab has 4 beds throughout the house - I know, we spoil him.

His favourite bed seems to be a doughnut style one I got from Aldi when he was a pup. It's too small for him now but he goes in it every day. It's fleec lined and all washable. He's got a scruffs one that he lies next to and puts his head on the outer edges rather than getting into it.

I made him a bed from a synthetic double duvet from ikea folded into 4 and covered with a fleece envelope held in place with Velcro it's easily washed and costs less than 20 quid

Ive got a k9 comfort , large size for my 50kg Rottweiler , it's by far the best dog bed I've ever had . Cost me about £140 ,
You'd probably only need a medium so would be cheaper . It comes with washable covers& a 10 year no flat guarantee , I've had it 5 years & looks like new .

My labradors have destroyed so many beds....so I finally caved and bought them Tuffies. Omg, I wish I'd bought them sooner!! Yes, they're expensive, but most definitely worth every penny.

DidSomeoneTrump · 27/01/2025 18:20

If you are going with Tuffies because your lab chews then I would go with this one.

We have one in the material you linked to and our pup did chew it. We patched it up though and it's still going strong. I'd say it's about five years old.

Do you have the wipe clean finish or the softer one?

Tuffies are excellent beds but I think the suggested sizes are too small. I'd go for a xl or even a xxl for a lab rather than the large as suggested. Mine is lab-ish size and the large is on the small size for her.

If you want a memory foam type bed, you could just buy some foam and buy a cover for it or put some blankets and a pillow on it and something underneath. Mine has a bed similar to the K9 one but it's a bit small for her so I bought some memory foam and a cover and put a duvet and a pillow on top and she can stretch out now.
