DDog is a female, spayed, nearly 1 year old Shihtzu-Bichon cross. No health issues (fingers crossed) except a couple warts and a fatty lipoma that isn't visible really. Extremely energetic.

Fed on high quality senior grain-free kibble (usually salmon, trout or fish mix with 60-80% fish). Doesn't feel interested in the dry kibble so we top up with whatever protein we are having that night before spices/sauces are added. This could be grilled salmon, chicken or once a week beef or lamb.

Her weights been a steady 7.2 kilos her entire life.

However sometimes the dinner we have isn't a suitable topper (think pizza night or a meal out etc). Can you recommend a high quality fed food that is NOT a large 400 grams can that needs fridge etc because it needs to come in one-off portions. Needs to be grain free, high in fish or meat and suitable for seniors. She's eaten grain free her whole life (except kids inevitably giving her bits).

Nearly 11 years old - hence all the senior talk!

Can you add a few tinned sardines on those occasions? Or a pouch of wet food? A fishy cat food pouch would go down well, I'm sure.

Branster · 26/01/2025 17:54

@muddyford has it spot on. Tinned fish (sardines or salmon or tuna etc).
I don't think dogs are allowed cat food, I can't remove why but it's something I know. Like dogs are not allowed raisins. Potentially bad for them.

Fish4Dogs do small 85g tins of mackerel or tuna with just veg added. They also have 100g cod or salmon mousse pouches.

Or something like Natures Menu frozen raw nuggets maybe? Could just defrost 1/2/3/whatever as needed. They have a huge range of different proteins.

I know its not what you asked but when I cook chicken I cut off the bits I wouldn't want to eat and keep for dog (eg sinewy bits), also look for reduced sliced meats in shops (and keep any ham etc that has been open slightly too long for us humans). Dog gets tasty topper on his food every night.

Webbox Naturals sell a senior dog grain free “pate” in 150g portions. You can get them in Sainsburys.

SittingNextToIt · 26/01/2025 18:36

Fabulous ideas - just what I was after ! Thank you! Tinned fish is also a fab idea to add to her diet on occasion anyway.

Is 150g still too big? Natures menu country hunter is 80% meat and they have quite a few flavours.
JR pets also have new toppers which come in 85g tins - they are pricey or their pate is brilliant and I sometimes use that for a topper or treats. It's 100% meat and comes in a variety of sizes.

We feed our dog Scrumbles wet food, you can get it in Sainsbury's. He has one packet a day mixed with his 5pm kibble.

Applaws do toppers I think one is 85g, there’s definitely a big and a small size anyway
