Help injecting my dog!

Does anyone here inject insulin? I need advice please! I got my vet pen last night, the nurse taught me how to tent my dogs skin, all good.

I’m really struggling with the actual injecting, I don’t know how far I’m meant to push the needle in and whether I should feel resistance as it goes in his skin? I can’t see if the needle is even in his skin because it’s that thin! I think I’ve done it this morning as there was no insulin on his fur & the pen was back to zero but it’s been a stress because I’m just. Ot confident I’m doing it right!

I don't think I'm going to be any help. When I had to inject mine a few years back, I used an old fashioned needle/syringe, not a fancy pen one! But the needle would go pretty much all the way in

Can you clip a patch so you can see?

We have been injecting our dog with insulin twice a day for a couple of years. It’s normal to be anxious at first but it gets much easier after a short time. You’ll feel fine about it after a few days.

Get your dog in a good light so you can see what you’re doing. Then tent the skin, usually in the neck area, and put the vet pen next to the skin, pointing downwards. Press the activator and hold it. If it works, there’s nothing to see. If the insulin doesn’t go into your dog, you’ll notice it on top of the skin.

There might be a little bit of resistance going through the skin itself but the needle is very sharp and slides in easily.

That’s it. Job done. It’s really no more complicated than that.

There’s good videos to help you.

Thank you, this is very helpful. It was the ‘how far does the needle go in’ that I was struggling with, thinking I was putting it in too far!

Thank you! I think I was expecting more resistance but this mornings & evenings ones have gone better & no insulin on his fur so fingers crossed I’m getting g the hang of my new diabetic nurse role! Very helpful, thank you!

When I had to inject the cat I did shave a little area at first to help me build my confidence
