Extending Leads

Can anyone recommend an extending lead that doesn't have a loud 'click' when it locks please?
I've just bought a flexi for times that my pup needs to be on a lead, but we want him to have a bit more freedom, and it's driving me nuts with its endless clicking!
TIA

I'm going to assume that even full grown adults don't know everything, and that someone having to ask for advice on an internet forum doesn't know about the subject they are asking about. These leads are dangerous, there's plenty of evidence about the risks to dogs and to owners. but if it's sanctimonious to tell people that then fine - even if we don't care about the owners getting injured perhaps some of us care about the dogs.

But I am quite happy to continue doing me - take your own advice and do you?

I think when fourteen people have already typed the same thing in response to the OP, to do the same suggests you don't really give a monkeys about either the OP or the dogs, just about your own virtue signalling. Anyway, this is also getting tedious and repetitive so I'm out.

I think you’re very much misunderstanding how I’m using one tbh.

i don’t use them on pavements or locked at an appropriate length - I’m using it only where it’s fine for the dog to ge at the end of it.

if it’s not fine for the dog to be at the end of it, then I’m swapping to a normal lead

so yep, it’s no different to having a long line at that point.

I have no interest in how you use them. I have never commented on your personal use of a flexi lead.

They are dangerous, they have caused injuries and death so personally along with RSPCA, BSVA, Battersea, APDT, Dog Behaviourists, APDC, Dogs Trust, Blue Cross I will never advocate for them and will encourage dogs owners to be aware of the issues of flexi leads.

You can all make your own choices.....

Obviously you doing you isn't a you trait. Did you find it boring and repetitive making the same complaint again?

Totally agree. It is absolutely bonkers to point out to people why something they think is a good idea is actually dangerous. Dog walker in my local park just two months ago needed stitches across their hand and fingers after the lead extended across their hand too quickly. There are loads of examples of people and dogs being injured by these sorts of leads, and in some cases the injuries have included amputation.

But let's absolutely not warn people who clearly don't know this already because it's much more fun not telling them.

I’ve worked in A and E for nearly 30 years and have never seen a hand injury caused by an extendable lead!

Well, I've seen a finger amputation caused by one, so injuries definitely happen!

Ive seen many injuries that are just freak accidents caused by what would be considered completely harmless household items. Significant injuries from extendable leads are pretty rare I would say in my very extensive experience.
Lets put it this way it wouldn’t stop me using one.

NoWordForFluffy · 19/01/2025 18:51

It would me!

There are many things / places I actively avoid due to my work! 😬

Flexi leads are great if used correctly, it is the twat on the end of it that is normally the problem, OP I think you will struggle to get a quiet one as they do clunk because of how they work, I taught my dog a 'steady' which basically means stop as you are nearing the end of the lead, and if he starts to bolt (very very rare) it is instantly stopped and locked before he gets anywhere near the end, I would rather use a Flexi than trying to manhandle a heavy wet longline for my dog that has no recall not through the want of trying, he is literally a shit that just doesn't care.
