Covered in mud

I rescued an 8yr dog with a horrible history at the end of September.

Tbh, I didn't even know if I really wanted to have another dog. Actually, I swore I'd never get another one.

Anyway, she has to have dental surgery on Thursday (I've made other posts) that I cant afford, but I'm currently sat on my settee, soaking wet, coated in mud, with an equally coated in mud old lady dog, and I'm soooo happy. She's never been taught recall or even how to play with a ball. Recall is coming on with long line training and many a biscuit. She's super reactive but she ignored all the dogs today and came straight back to me when I called/waved a biscuit in the air shouting 'ooooh, dog, a biscuit!'

I've wrapped her up in a blanket and she's snoring but I think it's time I got changed!

No reason for the post, really. Just that dogs are such great companions and give far more than they ever receive.

It sounds as if she fell on her feet when she got you as her new owner.

I hope her dental surgery is a success and that you will have many happy years together.

Dogs really are our best friends ❤

Really hope that the dental surgery doesn’t completely bankrupt you both and that it goes well.
My boy is coming up for 5 and we have been working on his reactivity (other dogs, things with wheels, anything moving faster than walking pace, general weird stuff) since we adopted him age 3.
He loves running about on a long line and churning the garden into mud. I spend half my life happily cleaning mud from the walls after he shakes himself and watching him sleeping, covered in mud on the settee. So what, he’s happy. I also don’t own a pair of boots or leggings that aren’t permanently muddy or being cleaned.
Dogs - you got to love them.

Ah, the joys of a muddy, happy dogs can’t be underestimated! Have a lovely hot chocolate with your cuddle and maybe invest in an equafleece once the surgery is paid off. As a spaniel owner it’s the only thing that keeps me sane in this muddy weather, but I wouldn’t change a thing!

Lovely post OP. It’s sounds like you’re both lucky to have found each other. Seeing a neglected dog responding to proper care, love and training is very rewarding. Dogs are the best.

Bless you for taking her on. I hope you have many happy years together. My girl is old and I know her time is limited, but I wouldn't be without her.

Clever doggo! I have a 12 1/2 year old rescue, got when he was 8, also don't think he'd been allowed off lead before. I worked through the longline etc and he's now usually pretty good but today he decided to ignore my recall twice. Even with me shaking the bag of treats at him. Though to be fair why would he come back to me with a bag of treats when there was something much larger and stinkier to eat... It is lovely when you start seeing them do normal dog things - I was quite proud the first time mine rolled in something disgusting! I hope you've dried out and the dental treatment goes well.

Aww such lovely, heart warming messages about all of your doggy friends. They really are the best.

It's so cold today and I honestly didn't want to go out, but we bundled ourselves up and had a lovely walk. We even managed to avoid the mud today!
