Hello my fabulous Podsquad, here is Podcast Thread III.

For anyone that is new to this thread, it's about my rescue dog, known as Pod.

Here is thread No. 2 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_doghouse/5197068-the-pod-cast?page=39&reply=141216881

And thread No 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_doghouse/5177112-oh-my-giddy-god?page=1

for if anyone would like to go back and see how astonishingly naïve and traumatised I was by taking on a fully grown, teenaged pointy dog who seemed determined to destroy me and everything I love.

Theatrics over, here is the Pod in question (obviously I've edited the lead out - I'm not mental).

If anyone doesn't have is Insta handle and wants it, just DM me. A video of me and Pod doing yoga together will appear at some point soon.

Apparently the developers who made our estate built it with freakishly wide, non standard gate posts so short of learning to weld we need another solution.

I've ordered a new latch and spring closer and DP and NDN are going to put it up at face level so it's out of naughty Pod's reach. And I can relax again til the next shower of nonsense presents itself 😅

Can you add a bolt high up on the other side of the gate that you can reach over to, but Pod can't?

OldSpeclkledHen · 17/01/2025 16:51

Ahhh ... well glad you're all ok, don't best yourself up about it, these things happen and we learn from them (and scare the shit out of ourselves in the meantime 🙈)

Dogs are dickheads. Just mahooosive dickheads. But we love them.

I normally put DDog out for an 8pm wee, and wait at the back door for him. Last night I didn't wait, just left the door open for him. Well - he flew back in before he'd had a wee, and proceeded to have mad zoomies session (all because I didn't hold his paw in the dark)

I jest of course, but he never zoomies so it was a bit cute/funny.

Made him go back out and waited this time (mug much?) and he did his business like a good boy.

WiddlinDiddlin · 17/01/2025 18:27

Our back gate has 3 seperate locks...

The Saluki and the Ancient one once got loose - attacked on a walk by another dog, DP managed to keep hold of the psychotic lurcher we then had, and the delightful but dim Deerhound (blesshersaintlysoulmaysherestinpeace)... but Pointy and Ancient slipped their harnesses and did a bunk.

I shit myself for some time - because she's thick and fast, and he was partially sighted and bitey with strangers...(a soft, inhibited bite but it IS a 'fuck off im scared' bite nonetheless and I don't expect strangers to tolerate any teeth-to-skin contact!!)

Both were caught by strangers, presented at a vets for scanning and and returned inside 3 hours... I think I aged about 300 years and really wished flower arranging was my passion, rather than dogs.

Neither got run over, in fact going by where they were found, neither crossed a road... and neither bit anyone, which is something of a miracle as Ancient Ones bite list is longer than his 'friends' list!

Shit very much does happen - if you own a dog, shit will happen. My dogs wear escape proof harnesses now and I only walk one at once and himself will do two at once. Lessons learned but sometimes... ugh!

When I was a child our DDog once got taken for a walk by my Stupid Brother who also took his airgun and started firing it off in the woods. Ddog (a sheltie, who normally stayed very close to her people) was scared and ran all the way home very fast, across a busy road, and causing a neighbour in between to come and check my DM was OK.

Not so DB was in serious trouble, not least because he hadn't actually noticed she was gone for quite some time.

MaxandMoritz · 18/01/2025 11:04

My previous beautiful lurcher girl jumped the fence when I was visiting my friend at her cottage in the Highlands. I had my younger dog on a long lead in the garden as the fence wasn't high and there were rabbits around but the older one, twelve years old, usually just sniffed in the patches of long grass.

I didn't even realise till she came limping back along the lane (from the direction of the main road - horror!). She had landed in a ditch on a sharp stem or stick so had a nasty wound in her ankle.

She recovered well after a couple of trips to the local vet fifteen miles away.

We live and learn.

Pod had a lovely scamper in the sunshine this morning followed by a trip to the cafe. Unfortunately we made a show of ourselves when leaving as he pulled halfway through the door sending one of the coffees flying. They felt sorry for us and replaced if free which I thought was lovely of them 😁

It really makes your day when someone shows you kindness, doesn't it 😊

Glad you had a lovely walk with His Podness!

HangingOver · 18/01/2025 17:16

Bloody Pod can open the pedal bin.

He had wet poops on his walk this afternoon so I was finishing up making his chicken and rice and was washing my hands when the little sod swiped a cooked chicken bone from the bin.

Hands still covered in soap, I lunged at him and removed it but he got a bit of soapy gob. I figured it was the lesser of two evils.

We had a glorious walk though. In spite of him quite literally screaming at another dog. He did five EXCELLENT passes at close distances to start with. I've figured out a brilliant new tactic for this btw. Instead of chopping all the pate into little chunks, I leave some of it in little batons. Then when passing a dog I let him have it mm by mm which keeps his nose glued to my hand with no breaks.

It only went wonky when a black lab (it's always a lab) charged over off lead to initiate play. Understandably upset at being tethered when his new pal was free, he was vocally disappointed for a few minutes. But it was smashing otherwise. He's chomped all his chicken and rice and is a tiny prawn beside me on the sofa. My lovely lovely boy.

Oh another fun update... I saw another Pod advertised by the charity my Pod came from and I told a lady I know about him who wanted a friend for her Pod. And she adopted him today!!

What a lovely update!

And what a lovely prawn pic 🙂

Well done for persevering, rescues are damned if they do and damned if they don't. We've all been willing you on, because we can all see it'll be alright in the end (some days will be absolutely freaking shit on that journey for sure - as you/we all know) but then ... days like today 🥰

Good job Pod and Hanging 🙂

Ellmau · 18/01/2025 17:57

He's got such an expressive face :)

sydsmum · 18/01/2025 17:59

Just when I thought your Pod updates couldn't get any better you top it off with a Pod adoption! Your Pod/tiny prawn is extremely handsome, with a nose that in my humble opinion requires a lot of kisses. Have a great weekend Pod and parents.

LadyGrillingSole · 18/01/2025 18:08

You're update has absolutely made my day 😊

Another lovely hound in a safe, loving home is fantastic 😎

And don't worry too much about the soapy Pod chops, years ago people washed their foul-mouthed kids mouth out with soap and they survived 😂

BirdOnTheBeach · 18/01/2025 19:06

Having never heard of Podenkos until I found your threads I saw my first one in the wild today, wasn't sure at first so went and asked.
Pod Mum seemed surprised I knew she was a Pod so explained I'm following your lovely thread and IG.
Hers was gingery white, aged 14, from Lanzarote and was adorably but loudly telling us both that I was delaying her return home for breakfast ....
It was the ears that made me look twice and the chattering at her Mum.

montelbano · 18/01/2025 21:04

He looks so innocent, as if butter wouldn't melt.................

WiddlinDiddlin · 18/01/2025 21:10

Good Pod News Report for today! Well done all!

He is an adorable Prawn ❤

HangingOver · 19/01/2025 12:25

I think I have another black eye brewing.

Pod has this springy tuggy thing that has a furry end with a rubber ball attached and an elasticated handle. This morning Pod walked for an hour, then tore round the paddock for an hour and screamed at a dog in the cafe... So he's well overdue a nap. Unfortunately DP needs to make the gate Pod-proof which involves power-tools, which Pod obviously has to loudly supervise.

So I was distracting him with his tuggy when the in hindsight fairly obvious design flaw in the tug became apparent ie. If the dog lets go at full tension, the bastard ball pings back and hits you, hard. In this case, in the eye socket.

Pod is attempting to be a tiny prawn but intermittently bellowing at any sign of unsupervised DIY happening in the garden.

TinyMouseTheatre · 19/01/2025 13:06

Your poor eye! Hope it's not as bad as it sounds Flowers

Love the idea of emotional support cheese Grin

LadyGrillingSole · 19/01/2025 13:48

Aww, he's all tuckered out from blacking your eyes 😉

My boy slaps me when he's next to me on the couch, roaching 🙁 Many a time you're likely to hear me saying "Oi, you big galoot! Don't backhand your mother!"

No one warns of hound related domestic injuries, it's a problem shrouded in embarrassment...😂

LadyGrillingSole · 19/01/2025 14:06

I hope you feel better soon, Hanging, I'm sure if the little monkey knew you were hurt he'd feel really guilty!

Haha we called that Biffing. He'll look you dead in the eye, all adorable and sleepy, then wallop you in the gob. His love is violent.
