Hello my fabulous Podsquad, here is Podcast Thread III.

For anyone that is new to this thread, it's about my rescue dog, known as Pod.

Here is thread No. 2 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_doghouse/5197068-the-pod-cast?page=39&reply=141216881

And thread No 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_doghouse/5177112-oh-my-giddy-god?page=1

for if anyone would like to go back and see how astonishingly naïve and traumatised I was by taking on a fully grown, teenaged pointy dog who seemed determined to destroy me and everything I love.

Theatrics over, here is the Pod in question (obviously I've edited the lead out - I'm not mental).

If anyone doesn't have is Insta handle and wants it, just DM me. A video of me and Pod doing yoga together will appear at some point soon.

I have been sending https://galgosdelsol.org/#skip a tiny monthly donation ever since I first heard about what happens to galgos who get the same treatment. I don't notice it and I know that regular donations, however small, are really useful for charities.

I don't know of a similar link for podencos but https://www.galgopodencosupport.org/galgos-podencos says something about the similarities and differences between the breeds and might be a good place to start if anyone wants to think about doing the same thing.

That was a hard read, Hanging. Unimaginable cruelty.

CaliforniaPoppies · 14/02/2025 09:58

That's brought tears to my eyes. Will make a donation later.

2025willbemytime · 14/02/2025 14:27

I've already been in tears twice today and I'm embarrassed to say I could read all that long post as can't face crying again. I will try later and once I sell more stuff I will donate.

diddl · 14/02/2025 14:35

That is just awful.

Incredible to me that it is allowed.

You'd think that they'd at least have to have them humanely pts.

HangingOver · 14/02/2025 14:38

Sorry to have upset everyone. I don't think people are aware just how bad it is, I know I wasn't.

SOS Podenco and Podencos in Need are two charities. I think there's one called Project Galgo as well.

Pod has had a run on the beach, chilly here!

I honestly couldn’t read that post for tears @HangingOver .
a lurker with a Romanian rescue who’s had her moments but we seem (sez she cautiously) to be stabilising. At least the recall is working with homemade liver treats!

I remember reading Jessica Mitford's autobiography some years ago.

She'd run away to Spain with her cousin Esmond Romilly & in a local cafe man was beating his dog.

She was furious & remonstrated with him.

Esmond then rebuked her for her "upperclassishness" saying how dogs weren't seen as pets & had to "earn their keep".

I think that was the gist of it.

Maybe that's still quite a prevalent attitude.

OldSpeclkledHen · 14/02/2025 18:25

Never liked Spain and how they treat their animals 🤬🤬🤬🤬 all animals are treated horrendously

@HangingOver that pic of your Pod needs to be the pin up boy for all the PODs over there

PhoenixFlight · 14/02/2025 19:46

This is a complete eye opener for me, poor Podencos. I’ve always loved Spain but what on earth. Animal lover or not, how could anyone be so cruel to another living creature… beggars belief!

MaxandMoritz · 14/02/2025 20:18

I thought things were bad here, but what's described in that article is another level.

One of my previous lurcher girls was handed in to a nearby Greyhound Rescue for rehoming by her Traveller owner when her working days were over. That was very good of him; they're not always so lucky. One of the vet nurses adopted a lurcher which had been left abandoned on waste ground with a broken leg when his owners moved on.

Catching up with The Dog House with Pod. They've FINALLY featured a problematic dog, Lady who has been with them for a year due to barking at other dogs and "love-nipping".

So basically the most problematic dog they're brave enough to put on telly is about 8000% less problematic than Pod 🤣

OP posts:
Snowmanscarf · 14/02/2025 20:57

I was almost in tears at the end when they showed Lady with her new owner.

WillowTit · 14/02/2025 21:00

oh i missed the end? did she really find an owner?

i guess it was building up to that happening, they were training her to be better with other dogs, i must have left the room

WillowTit · 14/02/2025 21:04

sorry i cant face to read the article above

Yeah it was a bit weird the couple who seemed to want her got triggered by her barking or something but then she met someone else, hurrah!

OP posts:
Ellmau · 15/02/2025 00:32

The woman in the couple said she had had a bad experience with a staffy before, I think it was him who loved the breed, and her barking triggered her.

But the eventual owner seems very committed to working with Lady.

I've decided I'm going to let the mud win until spring. It is absolutely pointless fighting against it, my house, clothes and furniture are just going to have to stay filthy til the county dries out. I'm going to end up like Pigpen from the Peanuts comics.

I think you're based in the Devon/Cornwall area, which case I agree about the mud!

We're having a very soggy break near the Helford River in a dog-friendly hotel, and the place is full of many happy muddy dogs and their drenched owners returning from their morning walkies on the beach.

PhoenixFlight · 15/02/2025 14:27

On the plus side, Pod is not white and woolly!

Pigpen was one of my favourite characters 😂

Pod got to play with Stan and his little pals this afternoon. He's so excited he's now being a prize wally. Does everyone think letting him out once an hour is ok? He's barking to go outside and go crazy every five bloody minutes and the only way he'll not shout continuously out doors is if I go out with him and it's FREEZING out there tonight. He can't actually need to pee that often surely can he?

I think that’s fine. Sometimes my dog gets obsessed with the outside and keeps asking to be let out but in the end we get sick of it and ignore him. He usually then sighs and eventually settles down.

WiddlinDiddlin · 16/02/2025 04:43

It is a tough call...

I did have a rescue dog who used asking to go out as a way to test whether it really worked, her starting a conversation with me.. she was a lot older than Pod though, 8 when I got her and a lifetime of being battered and kicked around (I had the misfortune to know her previous owners so do know exactly what her previous life was like!)...

When she realised she could ask me for something and the response would be positive... it nearly blew her tiny mind. For a while she would ask and ask and ask and ask and I got up and let her out every single time, and eventually the asking reduced... then it'd flare up again as she had a wobble in her confidence and needed to test it again.. and eventually it dropped to a normal reasonable level, asking to go for a pee/poo and leg stretch.

Pod might be doing that.. but he is also an adolescent, he's not a nearly 9 year old with major trust issues, he's an adolescent finding where the boundaries are and what happens if he pushes at them a bit. Its not 'bad' but it is very annoying and you have to tread that fine line between assuring him you are listening and you will help... but also not letting him run amok!

One sneaky tactic that may work... take him out on a 6ft lead each time. If he pees/poos, then take the lead off and have a game. If he doesn't he gets 2 minutes wandering at your pace and then back in. Same response every time and he will learn to toilet promptly if he wants to have a run about and if not, no run about. If you want to take him out to run about/chase a ball/play with the flirt pole etc, just suggest it in a moment when he is not yammering on at you (and I would obviously, he does need a bit of that).

It will make for a tedious few days but it might sort it!
