PICS ATTACHED: Just found this on my dog’s stomach

Not a clue what this could be. Only saw it this evening and she’s glued to me, so can’t be very old as I’ve never caught it. She doesn’t mind me touching it, is her usual self, etc

4 year old beagle

My first thought is a slightly inflamed nipple , is it in the right area for that ?

That was my first thought as well but it’s right on her stomach, in the crease of her hip bone

My dog has similar and vet said it was a hot spot and to stop dog licking it. It didn’t have the ‘head’ on it though.

Ooh I’ll look into those. She’s not at it at all thankfully. It was only by chance she was getting a belly rub and I copped it 🙈

I think it could be a histiocytoma. Have a Google and see what you think. One of my dogs had one which we did get removed as it was obviously bothering her, another one also has one but it's not causing her any issues at all.

That’s exactly the thing my dog had and the vet called it a hot spot, maybe making it simple for me ha

It's not a tick that's caused a reactionary swellings to engulf it, is it?

That's interesting - not that I'm any sort of expert but I would say those were 2 different things. I also have a dog of a breed that is prone to hot spots (I know, we do have lots of dogs!) and I'd say that a hot spot is more of a wet type of dermatitis. Hot to the touch too, and I think in years gone by it used to be known as a lick granuloma because they really want to lick or rub it to ease it.

If OP's dog isn't bothered by this 'thing' then that's why I suggested a histiocytoma, because that's basically a benign skin growth.

It's an interesting subject to me anyway - I do feel like I spend an extraordinary amount of time looking at lumps on dogs!. Did your dog's lump just disappear on its own @NewYearSameOldSameOld ?

No harm in getting your vet to have a look at it anyway OP.

A histiocytoma is a small growth though, a hot spot is another name for wet eczema, which is a skin think and will look quite different.

It looks like a histiocytoma to me (aka small benign growth) except is it oozing? The pic looks quite angry and inflamed, so I would keep a very close eye and make an appointment at the vet if it gets any bigger or angrier looking and doesn't clear up.

Not a tick, she wouldn’t have been anywhere to get one, and especially not this time of year

Thank you! She’s booked in for the next possible appointment so hopefully will have answers soon. Definitely not bothered by it - she looked just as confused by it as I did 🤣

As I said as well, she’s glued to me and I WFH so I’d have noticed if she was at it.

It’s not actively oozing but there is a sort of scab around the top of it

I thought histiocytoma as well, or possibly a sebaceous epithelioma. Our dog had a very similar-looking lump on his cheek, which we had removed because he kept rubbing it. The vet had initially thought it was an inflamed wart or a histiocytoma, but we had it sent for analysis to be on the safe side and it was a benign sebaceous epithelioma.

CarrieMoonbeams · 13/01/2025 20:36

Hi @SnoringHound , just wondering how you got on at the vet, what did they say the lump is?

Hello! Vet said definitely a localized benign growth, potentially a tiny histiocytoma as PPs said but more likely an inflamed reaction to an injury or allergy (she already has skin allergies). Prescribed a topical steroid for the week and will remove if it doesn’t go down itself.

Overall though, clean bill of health for pup!! ❤️

Thanks everyone for all your advice!
