To adopt another dog?

How many dogs does everyone have?

I have a 6 year old cockapoo and really want to get her a friend, we spend most of our days walking etc. But she enjoys her walks alot more when she can run around with other dogs.
Then I think, playing with them outside is completely different to a pooch moving in right? We've had dogs at the house and she's been absolutely fine but again they go after a few hours.
She's a very laid back lazy dog, we rehomed her 3 years ago and she wasn't walked much so although she loves it when she's out sometimes she's not overly keen on going to start with, maybe a friend will encourage her to go more? Or will the 'new dog' learn from her
I've been debating this since november, I have plenty of time to train, be with them etc. Our dog is trained incredibly well so know I have the patients with that side.
I really want another so does the rest of the family but what if they don't get on and I'm stuck with carnage for 12 years 😂

I'd love people's experiences on second dogs and how it went, bad and good!

I really considered getting a rescue dog but just couldn't after all the trials tribulations stress and pain involved in my last beloved dog, a rescue from Battersea who had serious issues, bit everyone he loved, and should never have been put up for rehoming. Who was described as a sweet little dog. The rescue centres tell lies at worst, and simply do not really know the dogs in their care at best.

I got a puppy after one of our Ddog's died as we had always had two who had been together since they were about a year old. Initially he was excited to see Dpup but then pretty quickly became disinterested when he realised she was staying. I think she gets on his nerves a bit sometimes due to different energy levels and ages but they seem fond of each other and will check on on each other through the day then go back to their favourite spots to sleep.

DPup is very much a lap dog and I'm not 100% sure if she would accept another dog joining us when elderly dog passes away so I will probably just have one dog in the future

A well bred puppy is usually a massive recipe for success. Two years of hard work, less intense as time goes on, and you will have a wonderful member of the family. Most rescued dogs have long term issues. My one year old cocker spaniel has none. Owning her is joyful.

That's true, I suppose it's a gamble older or puppy. I did see a lovely older dog but unfortunately the owner didn't know how she'd react with cats so didn't want to risk it.
I say getting a puppy, it won't be yet, we're in no rush and will keep searching for the right puppy/dog

Absolute nonsense. You can see a puppy's character at 8 weeks of age and if you research the breeder thoroughly and get a puppy from a breeder with a sound reputation you pretty well know how those 8 weeks have gone. And from 8 weeks forward it's entirely up to you how that puppy grows and develops.

With apologies for the earlier sarcasm, it just seems while you are rightly putting a lot of thought into the decision, you're missing some pretty big signs from your existing dog.

You say she wasn't walked much for the first three years of her life and that she is laid back and lazy and not always keen to go for a walk but then you say we spend most of our days walking. I just wonder if she's absolutely knackered. Or in discomfort or even pain or just is a low energy dog and the last thing she wants is a pup in her life. Sure she likes to run around with other dogs but that doesn't mean that she should.
You know her of course and you clearly want what is best for you all but your op is a bit all over the place and I wonder if you are missing something. Good luck whatever you decide.
