Washing pet items

We've just got a brand new washing machine so I am trying to preserve the newness!

We have a 7 month old black cocker and he sheds more than I expected. We wash his vet bed, blanket and towels regularly.

I have tried using that pet hair dissolver stuff you can buy from B&M but think it's rubbish. Has anyone tried those washing bags from Amazon? You wash all your items in the big fabric bag and it's meant to contain the hair so it doesn't clog up your machine.

Is there anything specific you all do to minimise fur in the washing machine?

Yes, I use both the bags and fur dissolver stuff for all pet washing. Works a treat, and I have a husky cross.

Also look at a Furminator for grooming if its appropriate for his coat. And a Eufy robot hoover to keep on top of fluff on the house.

I have a LOT of techniques to reduce the fluff in this place!

You can get little spiky balls to put in the washing machine that collect the hair.

Good to hear the bag works well! I think I will buy one. I wasn't sure as Amazon has very mixed reviews. I have a Miele vacuum and run it around twice a day, then use a flash mop. We only have a small house so doesn't take long but my god, the hair gets everywhere. My bathroom is fully white tiled and gets covered in fur even though he's not allowed upstairs!

The horse washing bags are brilliant. Mine was orange ( I gave it to my SIL) keeps all hair inside the bag. Buy the biggest bag you can.

Yes have always used the bags from Amazon, def worth using, though some are more durable than others. The last couple I've bought have torn - have sewed them up again which works temporarily. Might have to splash out on a more expensive version as we're getting another very hairy dog soon.

Definitely worth having washing bags. And I use the Pet Hygiene washing liquid which keeps their things fresh and fragrant. I have a new washing machine too!

Agree with the net washing bags. You can get really large ones that will fit pet beds and blankets. And check the little filter usually at the bottom front. Unscrew it now and again and clean it.

Is he a working or show cocker? I’m amazed by the amount of shedding. Maybe look at changing the food too. It can affect the skin.

Working, and I don't think he looks that hair really. We have hard wood floors so I don't know if I just notice it more, but it gets everywhere. All over the kitchen tiles and everything! I hoover once or twice a day and also mop every day and wipe everything down.

I didn't realise food affects their skin. He's on Millie's Wolfheart which is a decent kibble, and I'm looking at doing 50/50 with a raw topper once payday rolls around. He has salmon oil regularly too.

Food sounds fine. I know my boy seems to moult more than usual but honestly, we have hard floors and used to get the Dyson out daily to get the tumbleweed fur from the cats but with the dog, twice a week is fine. He’s moulted more recently as he’s on chemo but still not the extent you’ve said. Have you ever shaved him? I know my boy’s brother was shaved by a groomer and that triggered extra hair loss.

They are all different though.

snoopysnoooper · 08/01/2025 17:26

@TeenLifeMum He's only 7 months and has been to the groomers once just to get used to it. He is due to go again as he's got grinch feet and a fluffy butt so maybe a trim will help! I do try and brush him regularly too. I am a bit of a clean freak which doesn't help matters either!

I take all the pet bedding to as Revolution washer and dryer.

The drums fit 18kg and I bung it all in and can keep an eye on it whilst I'm parked up next to it.

I use it after a dog walk so that the dogs are asleep and I can catch up with stuff on my phone.
