My dog is 3.
He started this morning with his stomach squeaking.
Then he was sick (just like bile )
He has been going to the toilet as normal (no diarrhoea) but lethargic .
He ate a scrambled egg and kept it down.
I tried him with some dog food which he ate but 20 mins brought it back up.

What could be wrong ?
Should I try another scrambled egg ?

Put this post on the DogHouse bit on Pets

Otherwise you'll get loads of differing advice
I have no idea with dogs how long you keep an eye on them or when it becomes a "Vet-Now" situation.

Lots of very knowledgeable folk on DogHouse

shutmycurtain · 03/01/2025 15:47

Thankyou I've just asked for it to be moved
I didn't know that section existed

Don't feed him at all.

Phone your vet for advice.

HashtagShitShop · 03/01/2025 15:51

Is there any blood in his stool or vomit? If there is, then get him to the vet, especially if a large amount of constantly stooping to poo and there being blood. One of mine had haemorragic gastroenteritis and if we'd listened to the vet and not pressed to go on (late on a Sunday afternoon) she wouldnt have made it overnight most likely. I stress this is only of there's lots of blood, particularly in the stool and constantly stopping for poos etc, especially if only blood comes out when they do.

If just squeaky belly and bringing things back up It could be something that he's eaten that would be best to starve him for the rest of the day to let his stomach settle. Then try something bland like some chicken and rice the next day.

Are they drinking, behaving normally and eating grass? Do they seem lethargic? Are their gums pale? Does water stay down?

shutmycurtain · 03/01/2025 15:53

@HashtagShitShop no there's no blood in stool or vomit
The vomit was just bile and then just brought his dinner up.
Then he went to his empty bowl licking it (as if he was hungry )
He is drinking normal
He is lethargic but still follows us in the kitchen when we go in.

Stop posting on MumsNet. Take him to the vet.

shutmycurtain · 03/01/2025 15:53

@HashtagShitShop yes water stayed down and the egg
He was only sick when he ate the dog food

HashtagShitShop · 03/01/2025 15:56

I would stop all food, including the egg but keep a fresh water bowl down. If anything like mine they might try repeat the vomit to ge got cleared up ASAP.

Contact your vet and tell them, explaining he's keeping the water down only and that he's lethargic and has a noisy belly. Tell them when the last wee and poo were and their consistency.

Hopefully it's just something he has eaten that is disagreeing with him.

Ladybyrd · 03/01/2025 16:07

It could be he's swallowed something he shouldn't have and is trying to bring it up, but all anyone here can do is speculate. I'd call the vet.

Floralnomad · 03/01/2025 16:12

Get him seen at your regular vet this afternoon/ evening at least then you will get an idea of what’s wrong and will hopefully be able to avoid OOH vet fees .

shutmycurtain · 03/01/2025 16:14

My vets is now closed until Monday
I will see how he is tomorrow and go from there.
Is it possible to have an obstruction and still go to the toilet for a bowel movement?

OP posts:
CousinBob · 03/01/2025 16:18

Not likely to be an obstruction if he has a normal bowel movement. Probably eaten something he shouldn’t.

shutmycurtain · 03/01/2025 16:20

@CousinBob okay Thankyou
He's had 3 normal bowel movements today

My insurance company has a 24/7 vet advice line where you can get advice over the phone/on video call if you need to, maybe check your policy if you have the same?
One of my labs has been like this before and she had swallowed a sock! She brought it back up. I did call my vet and he advised if she was eating and toileting then to monitor her carefully. Lo and behold up came the sock, she did this several times as a youngster.
I would definitely take some advice from a professional or you won't settle, I know how anxious I get when my animals aren't right!

Yes, if the obstruction is partial.

Rule of Thumb: If you're worried enough to post on mumsnet for advice, you should be ringing a vet. Out of Hours vets often offer advice over the phone for no charge.

NorthRiding · 03/01/2025 16:35

As PPs have said, check his gums - if they're pale (and not dark pink), then that's a sign there's something up. So is serious lethargy.

Squeaky tummies have been par for the course with my dogs, usually accompanied by grass-eating then piles of frothy bile with grass in it, and sometimes a few unpleasant cowpats but it's usually been something manky they've eaten, and it passes within 24 hours. I wouldn't offer him anything else to eat, but make sure he's got plenty of water to prevent dehydration. But call the out of hours vet to put your mind at rest.

lovemycbf · 03/01/2025 19:08

My dear old girl was sick twice and died the next day of acute pancreatitis
Please take your dog to the vets no one on here can tell you what's wrong
I mean this kindly

shutmycurtain · 03/01/2025 20:20

Rang the out of hours vet and she said to rest his stomach till morning
She said it was a good sign that he is having regular bowel movements
She said can't keep food down by morning to ring up and book in they will examine him and anti sickness injection etc

shutmycurtain · 04/01/2025 12:11

He woke up this morning
Had some scrambled egg and chicken a few hours ago and kept it down
Had some water and that's stayed down too
He's now in the garden running around with his ball
Only for 5 minutes tho as it's cold
He's well wrapped up with his coat on
