First and only litter of puppies

marshmallowbum · 30/12/2024 07:06

Our family pet dog is having first and only litter of puppies. She's not KC registered but dad is. I'm really not sure where to list the puppies for sale. As she's not KC registered we can't use the obvious places like Champdogs but we want the puppies to go to forever homes where they will have happy lives.

Any advice welcome x

@sashh - one litter from one dog wouldn’t meet the criteria for a licence in our county. You need to be breeding multiple dogs in a 12 month period to go for a licence. (When people say “licensed breeder” round here, it’s usually one step up from a puppy farm.)

We breed working gun dogs and collies - there's nothing wring with breeding a nice purebred family dog OP, despite what half of mumsnet might say.

Advertise on local Facebook groups, careful of explicitly posting "for sale". We just put looking for a new home and pm for details. Preloved is another good one.

If you're rural there is alot less stigma about dog breeding - pop an ad in your local agri merchants if possible.

You should have thought of this before you started breeding.

I'm an a breeder - 20 years experience. KC (Assured) -not that it means much these days. In 20 years I've had 5 litters - why? Because breeding is a responsibility as much as dog ownership is. Just because your dog is only having one litter doesn't make you a saint - it's got nothing to do with anything tbh.

You should have thoroughly vetted and been vetted by the 'stud' owner - clearly you were not. So, your puppies are unlikely to be robust or healthy and the stud owner should also know people who would want a puppy - the fact you clearly don't know this tells me a lot.

Good potential owners won't touch you with a barge pole. Good owners wait years. I have a full waiting list for my next litter - it's been full for over two years. I won't have another litter until probably June, at the earliest, and my last litter was in November 2022.

You'll get the cheap, inappropriate, people who have been refused by responsible, ethical, breeders who know what they're doing. Poor puppies. Best off being relinquished to a rescue who can actually find someone responsible to take them in.

Greedy. Unethical. Foolish. Selfish.

Did you do this to make some money? no words if you did.

EmpressaurusKitty · 30/12/2024 09:52

Well, anyway, it’s done now.

So assuming the OP knows what to look out for during the birth and has the number of an emergency vet, the best thing she can do after that is make sure all the puppies go to properly vetted homes with a promise that if the owners can’t keep them for whatever reason, they’ll return them to her.

Seriously? I don't know how people can be so stupid.

CellophaneFlower · 30/12/2024 12:14

Word of mouth is probably best, as I doubt people would travel far for a non-pedigree dog.

We did over a 7 hour round journey to get our non pedigree, non purebred and as once described on here non dog (well not a real dog to be precise 😂). Parents were fully health tested though, which is often harder to find in cross breeds, hence travelling so far.

What was a your logic in breeding op?

What was a your logic in breeding op?

Because we thought puppies would be cute and someone told us down the pub bitches should have one litter 🙄 Oh, and maybe we can make a few bob on the side from gullible people.

ACynicalDad · 30/12/2024 17:58

We got a wonderful dog from pets4homes, I watched and read for a while before jumping, but he's beena dream. I'd also stick it on your FB incase anyone you know has friends who are looking.

sashh · 30/12/2024 08:29

Did you get a licence to breed OP?

If not you could be in trouble if you make a profit from selling the puppies.

You may also need to declare any profit to HMRC

sashh · 01/01/2025 05:59

My local 'next door' had someone come on and ask, "does anyone have a male X breed to breed with mine?"

Some people have no idea.

Forgottobuymincepies · 01/01/2025 11:47

A new to the school gate df was telling me about his latest bitch... His plans to sell her on post 8 weeks later.. Then the next ddog he was getting to breed... I walked away. Been a couple of years and he knows not to bother with me.. Utter gutter man.
