Feeding times

When does everyone feed their dog?
I've got a 12 month old springer, and have been feeding him at 7:30, a snack at 12:30, and tea at 18:00.
He's now not too fussed about his breakfast, eager for his lunch, and starts driving me nuts to be fed from about 17:00.
I'd like to drop to 2 meals, but he does seem to enjoy having 3.
Just wondering what other people's routines are?

We feed three times a day but the timings are fairly flexible, i.e. breakfast can be anywhere between 6.30am and 9am, lunch between 12 and 3, dinner between 5.30pm and 7pm

brushingboots · 28/12/2024 21:32

Cocker spaniel here, 18 months. We feed twice a day, after walks. So usually that makes meal times 10-11am and then 6-8pm depending on what times we go out. But today we had a totally different schedule so she had breakfast at 10 after a quick poo walk, then a whole day out walking, and home at 8.30pm so she ate when we got in. Think I dropped the third meal at about six months as she didn't want lunch anymore.

Some days if we don't get in from the walk until noon she doesn't eat until then, or likewise if we walk at 7am she eats at 8.30, so it's all based around when the walks are.

Giant breed so four meals a day.
Times of her two main meals can vary, depending on weather/walks as obviously we don't feed for an hour before or after exercise because of risk of GDV.

7am small breakfast
11am/12pm larger meal
5pm/6pm main meal
9.30pm small supper

Springer x here - he gets half his kibble put down in the morning when I get up and the other half at about 5pm. He largely ignores it whatever time I put it down and eats when he feels like it as he's really not food motivated!

biscuitsandbooks · 28/12/2024 23:53

Our beagle is fed three times a day.

Handful of biscuits when we get up (anywhere between 7-10am)
Main meal at lunch (anywhere between 12-3pm)
Handful of biscuits before bed at around 11pm.

He also gets a bonio or a dental chew at around 4pm and the other option around 8pm.

Labrador and springer spaniel here. Breakfast at 6.00, around a third of their ration, then supper at 5.30.

Our springer is like this with food. Put his breakfast down and he eats it whenever. Usually wolfs it down when he hears next door's dogs bark.
Tea is usually given around 4pm but can be later in the summer

He dropped to twice a day at around 18mo

He might go to just an evening meal because he sometimes asks for his tea, but never asks for breakfast

EdithStourton · 29/12/2024 08:43

After the morning walk and after the afternoon walk. In the summer that might be 7am and 6pm, and in the winter 9am and 3pm.

They seem to thrive on it, and it works for us.

Snowmanscarf · 29/12/2024 08:45

Around 7am and 5pm, but it varies. Labrador.

Maybe give him a bigger breakfast, and/or use a slow feeder?

PuppyMonkey · 29/12/2024 08:47

Golden retriever - 7am and 5pm. He will know to the precise minute when it is 5pm.Grin

OldEarAche · 29/12/2024 08:52

Ours is fed first thing in the morning (around 6-7am) then at 11-12 for lunch and then he has a boneo before he goes to bed (7-8pm)

This just works best for his bowels (means we get a morning poo) and sleep. He's a cocker so at 100mph from 6am till 7pm then he drops to sleep and doesn't move till the morning

mutleyschuckle · 29/12/2024 09:06

3 year old raw fed springer gets breakfast between 6-8 then dinner between 4-6. Usually 4 as he's doing his best rspca starving face by then & my son gives in 😂 then a few little biscuits or a dentastik before bed.

LandSharksAnonymous · 29/12/2024 09:17

Four times a day - 6am, 10am, 2pm and 6pm. I have Goldens and they’re prone to GVD. Feeding more meals that are smaller and closer together minimises the chances of the circumstances enabling bloat to occur

DominoRules · 29/12/2024 11:08

3 year old Springer and he’s fed 3 times a day - big breakfast around 6.30/7, lunch 12/1, then big dinner 5/6. He also has a handful of biscuits at bedtime. And a fair few treats too…..

He has an insatiable appetite, eats way over double the calories recommended but is always on the edge of being too skinny.

ExceededUsefulEconomicLife · 29/12/2024 15:28

I've always just left the food out because they're not pricks about it. If I didn't or they were, I'd do similar to myself, 7/8, 12/1 and 6/7.

Undisclosedlocation · 29/12/2024 15:32

Goldens here. 3 meals a day, with a flexible schedule similar to @tizwozliz

Newpeep · 29/12/2024 15:50

My POOR STARVING BORDER TERRIER (or so she’d tell you!) is fed breakfast when we get up before walk if walking mid morning or after walk of walking first thing. A couple of tiny fish cubes at lunch time then tea when we eat. She is a proper piglet and will eat all day. She gets another bigger fish cube, small tripe stick or other natural treat around 9 pm. Rabbit ears are her favourite.

Training days I cut one meal in half. The closest to the session. She’s a perfect weight and body score of around 4.

TheSandgroper · 30/12/2024 09:08

The Starving Border Terrier routine was walk at 7 am, home for my breakfast then her breakfast. Dinner was after we had eaten. A few kibble bits occasionally as rewards. She learnt her manners and it worked well. She throve on routine. Always 10 kg and always solid muscle, according to the vet.

Joystir59 · 01/01/2025 17:34

1yr old cocker spaniel here. Rosie gets three meals of kibble a day. Lunch is very small. Treats are just bits of her normal kibble. She also gets a little piece of banana and a blue berry after breakfast and a piece of raw carrot after tea.

CMOTDibbler · 01/01/2025 20:49

Mine are fed at 7am and 7pm, with a lovely dried trachea snack at about 2
