Before getting a dog I want to do as much research as I can. I'm sure I've seen a book recommended on here that's supposed to be a really useful guide to dog ownership. Does anyone know what it is or have one they can recommend themselves? TIA.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Peasy-Puppy-Squeezy-step-step/dp/1788701607 - that's the one people rave about. Personally...I don't find it that impressive. I think he misses off key 'things' that a new owner should have - like a house-line etc. But it covers the basics well enough

Youtube is a far better (and free) option as actually watching someone train a dog properly is far more valuable - and makes you far more likely to take in the 'dos' and 'don'ts' than reading about it

Check out the Facebook group Dog Training advice and support which is great. They have loads of free guides and they've put them all into a book which is great called Dog Training and Behaviour Solutions by Sally Bradbury

Depends what kind of dog you will get. I love Mission Control

The best book I found was The Happy Puppy Handbook by Pippa Mattinson. It's much easier to follow than the Puppy Squeezy book and I kept it by my side to refer to until MuddyPup was nearly a year old - and he's my fourth dog.

I also recommend this book, was invaluable when caring for my dog who is, impossibly, now 8! But we are probably getting another dog next year and I shall reach for the handbook again.

Not a book but a commitment to weekly dog training classes for the first 12-18 months. Good citizen dog scheme from the Kennel Club is great, it teaches all the basics and beyond plus your dog learns to be around all kinds of other dogs.
Many do a 10-12 week puppy class and that's it. It's like letting your DC attend reception class and believing that's all the schooling they need.
