How much does your dog cost?

We've had our greyhound for 3 months now and I love him to pieces but he is so expensive! Just wondering what the average is, how much do you spend on your dog every month?

I just worked out we spend £130 a month plus £50 every 8 weeks on kibble!

Is that more than what you spend?

Roughly
£80 for food. He's being really fussy atm so mainly he's just eating kibble. We do offer him other stuff though
£20ish insurance
£120 dog walker
£60 every 3 months for Bravecto
£35 every couple of months for a groom
We pay boarding fees when we go on hols. I worked out the other day that he costs us approx £3k a year

Worth it though. Love him.

biscuitsandbooks · 26/12/2024 23:56

£57 insurance
Approx £30 for food
Maybe £20 a month on chews

His boosters are £35 a year and that's it, really. He's fairly cheap all things considered.

Girlintheframe · 27/12/2024 00:39

Insurance £116
Food £50
Worming etc - 15
Day care £88-110
Incidentals/vets - 20

Approx £300 a month

muddyford · 27/12/2024 06:45

Care plan at vet £20
Insurance £20
Food (good quality kibble) £22
Scent training £30
Treats and odds and ends £10

So around £100 per month. He's a three year old Labrador.

Ylvamoon · 27/12/2024 06:56

Just done a rough calculation in my head... £320.- for 1 small & 1 medium sized dog. 🫣
But, I do doggy sports and compete, theyalsogo regularlyto the groomer. I hope they are happy with all the care and activities I provide for them!!

HappiestSleeping · 27/12/2024 07:01

Adult labrador:
Food £50 per month
Vet plan £20 per month
Insurance £100 per month

Above costs approximate and don't include treats / toys etc, or boarding costs when we go on holiday.

He recently cost several thousand as he had a joint problem, so I am very pleased I have insurance.

OldSpeclkledHen · 27/12/2024 07:03

I try not to add it up he costs more than my horse 😳

FeegleFrenzy · 27/12/2024 07:04

£36 insurance
probably about £20 on kibble
£100 average for an ad hoc dog walker
£35 every six months for arthritis meds but if she goes onto the injection that’s going to be £45 a month.

Netaporter · 27/12/2024 07:19

Hope I’ll make everyone feel better 😳

7 yr old male Leonberger owner here.

Insurance roughly £200pcm
Raw food (home made) £4.50 per day so £136pcm
Wash and blow dry Grooming £60pcm
plus boosters/worming etc.

Don’t want to even think about how many hoovers/steam mops/cleaning products/car valeting/interior wall redecoration I’ve been through/had to do since owning him….

On the plus side, he doesn’t like a bed - a nice cold floor is best so he doesn’t add to the washing…and he is the world’s best intruder deterrent. He’s also very handsome which is why I forgive him for the other stuff 😂

muddyford · 27/12/2024 07:35

Sorry, my Labrador's insurance is £40 a month. We pay annually and my morning division skills, before my second cup of tea, can be poor! So roughly £120 a month all in, £4 a day, which I think is outstanding value!

rubiconartist · 27/12/2024 07:56

£100 a month for insurance and vet plan. This does mean all expected costs are covered like flea and worm treatment.
£85 for food.
Probably another £20 on treats and other bits.

We have two dogs so pretty much double that although one is younger so her insurance is cheaper at the moment.

We were with a different insurer with our old dog but this ended up more than £200 a month so we moved to a less good policy.

bakewellbride · 27/12/2024 20:45

Thanks for all the responses. Reassuring to know we are all spending a fortune and it's not just me! Dogs are very expensive.

£160pm insurance - will go up again next year plus 20% excess, so probably closer to £250pm
£25pm vet club
£50pm food
£100pm dog walker
Probably about £25pm on other stuff, like bones, treats, toys.

It's a lot. Mainly the insurance, which I'd hate to do without as he's cost about £15k more over his lifetime than I've paid in premiums.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 27/12/2024 20:53

magicstar1 · 27/12/2024 21:23

€500 per month basic.

€220 for medication
€110 every two weeks for food
€28 vet plan
€40 pet insurance

Plus treats, toys etc.

She's a German Shepherd and she's totally worth the cost.

familyissues12345 · 27/12/2024 23:16

Food - £30 frozen raw + £20 dry

Insurance - £70

Dog Walker - £15 per week (one walk)

She's only a small dog, so doesn't cost a fortune to feed. We do buy good quality though as we can afford to as she doesn't eat that much!

DominoRules · 28/12/2024 07:50

Loads!

Food - £130
Insurance and vet lab - £60
Weekly class - £120
Gundog session (about very 6/8 weeks) - £45 pro rata a month
Grooming (every 2 months) - £30 a month
Treats/toys/training aids - £20 maybe?

He’s worth it though so it’s money well spent

tabulahrasa · 28/12/2024 08:55

Your food cost seems high to me - I’m £85 a month on dry and about £40 on wet…. For 2 dogs, a collie and a small GSD sized mutt and they’re on mid price food not really cheap ones.

Orher costs
chews and toys and stuff about £30 a month
wormer and other parasite stuff £40 a month
vaccinations £240 a year so… £20 a month if we spread it

insurance £30 for the collie £35 for the other one

and the not collie is on behavioural meds that aren’t covered by insurance at £70 a month plus £50 every 6 months for a check up

I occasionally use private enclosed fields at £7 a shot, but it’s once or twice a month at most.

Ive also spent a few thousand on training for the mutt, but that’s over a few years, so dunno how to factor that in 🤣

Don’t do groomers, wouldn’t unless I had a breed that needed actual haircuts.

so very roughly about £360 a month for 2 dogs 😐

on paper I can’t afford them 🤣

HarryBlackberry1 · 28/12/2024 09:35

She is so expensive:
Food - 60 per month
Insurance and vet plan - 100
Dog walker - 300

LandSharksAnonymous · 28/12/2024 10:41

Tbh £155 a month (or £130 a month + £50 every eight weeks) sounds really cheap to me if that includes insurance, toys, medication, vet care etc.

Insurance for mine (four dogs) is close to £600 a month. Cheapest of them costs £75 in insurance. Over £400 a month in food. So £100 per dog. Then I have treatment (fleas, ticks etc), any toys, ingredients to make their treats, veterinary checks (health tests which I do on mine every year-18 months)...

Snowmanscarf · 28/12/2024 10:43

muddyford · 27/12/2024 06:45

Care plan at vet £20
Insurance £20
Food (good quality kibble) £22
Scent training £30
Treats and odds and ends £10

So around £100 per month. He's a three year old Labrador.

Curious, what insurance company do you use?

SensitivePetal · 28/12/2024 10:46

About £470 a month.
£270 of that is daycare as I work full time and no partner. Another hundred is insurance and routine health care plan, £50 food, £15 petrol and the rest is what it costs us to board her when we are away usually for two weeks a year. Really expensive and I’m looking to replace the daycare with giving (forcing) mu teens to do more/ be home more. I’d love a mutual dog swap for holidays in south west London if anyone is interested!

SensitivePetal · 28/12/2024 10:53

Someone unthread mentioned intruder deterrent: good point, I’ll credit her the £50 per month I’d otherwise spend on a monitored alarm. She would actually lick a burglar. But they don’t know that as she has a very loud, deep bark.

TippledPink · 28/12/2024 10:55

I have two dogs (cocker spaniel and pug/jack Russell cross). Both on raw diet which is about £70 every 6 weeks, flea and worm every month which is about £30 for £3 months supply. Then any extra money for treats as and when! They love a teddy and the ones that last the longest are the £2 doughnuts you get from Pets at Home so we just replace those as and when needed. I WFH so don't need a dog sitter and they hate travelling in the car so we don't drive anywhere for their walks, we are lucky they have lots of country walks on our doorstep. I bought some dog clippers and cut the cockers hair myself regularly.

I have never vaccinated my dogs and don't have insurance - I will pay out if anything is needed at the vets. My last two dogs were greyhounds and only needed the vets a couple of times in over 10 years for teeth and a fox attack. I would never not take them due to cost and think it's a bit out of order that people on this thread are insinuating that if you don't have insurance or pay out monthly for extras you don't take proper care of your dog.
