Dog food brand - 8 yo cocker spaniel?

We feed him Arden grange. Have forever. Think he’s fine on it but does often need his anal glands manually emptying by the vet. Vet suggested we look into other foods to see if that helps.

what dog food brand do you reccomemend please?

Chappie

This used to be the case with our spaniel. What worked for us was Glandex anal gland chews. Get them from Amazon. One a day and after just a week there was no more scooting along the floor.

AbitSceptical · 20/12/2024 23:32

Royal Canin kibble. The red one. Best value for huge bag on Amazon. Lasts ages.
I also give small amounts of ‘human’ food ie fish skins, leftover chicken and veg.

PorridgeFace · 20/12/2024 23:53

We use Millie's Wolfheart

spiderlight · 20/12/2024 23:54

Our cocker is thriving on Barking Heads pouches.

CaptainBeanThief · 21/12/2024 00:56

We feed our 14 month skinners and jolleys salmon own brand (all kibble)
We also give him left over human food i.e fish/chicken occasionally

redboxer321 · 21/12/2024 07:55

You need to firm up his stools if you want to prevent anal gland issues.
A barf diet should do that but might not necessarily suit you or him.
Is he on AG wet or dry? The wet looks ok to me the dry not so much.
If he's on wet food I'd try keeping him on AG and try adding Stoolrite to his food.

Millie's Wolfheart

Newpeep · 21/12/2024 16:42

I use Millie’s wolfheart with barking heads or butchers wet as a topper. Nice small firm poos. It’s firming them up that will help anal glands.

Happierthaneverr · 21/12/2024 16:53

Our vet said give him weetabix for breakfast for firm up his poo

Wells37 · 21/12/2024 17:09

Bella and duke raw

Sistertwo · 21/12/2024 18:17

Ours is on Years for the last 6 months and it's only now that I am thinking we haven't had to get his glands done.

forgotactually · 21/12/2024 20:06

My dog has Platinum (lamb flavour)
Lovely hard poos.

MissRainbowBrite · 21/12/2024 20:10

Another recommendation for Millie's Wolfheart. Our Springer is 11 and been on it since she was a puppy, she does very well on it.

longtompot · 21/12/2024 20:18

Mine was in Arden Grange amongst others as a pup but we soon switched her over to Millie's Wolfheart and she has been on it ever since. She is 12 and hasn't had to have hers expressed for several years (I can't remember the last times she had them done) so unless it's to do with her genetics, the food seems to be playing a good part.

Dearg · 21/12/2024 20:21

Add fibre like Protexin fibre for dogs. Have not had dogs expressed for years since starting this. They are on different foods but both fine. weetabix or pumpkin powder are also good, but this stuff is so low in calories it’s negligible.

averythinline · 21/12/2024 21:57

Spaniel is on millies wolfheart has been for years no problems ever.... Have tweaked which flavour /carb ratio ... Talk to them they will recommend one to try...

PiggyPigalle · 12/05/2025 22:06

I'd never buy products from the Vet or one they recommend. They get incentives from the companies, so not impartial advice.

IAMS here. And if she gets bored with it, the occasional random Bakers or something.
