My dog urinates on other dogs

My male working lab 3 years old (not castrated) wees on other dogs.

When we are out on a walk if other dogs come to say hello to him he cocks his leg and urinates on them. It tends to be smaller breed of dogs not ones that are a similar size to him.

It's very embarrassing and now other dog walkers and owners are avoiding me which I totally understand

Any reason you haven't castrated? Bit of a big move to see if it would stop this, but if you intend to do it one day anyway then i'd get it done sooner rather than later.

Neutering may not make the slightest bit of difference - my neutered beagle has also been known to do this!

HJ40 · 17/12/2024 07:26

Surely if he's a working lab he's well trained? Back to doggy school.

Mindymomo · 17/12/2024 07:36

My intact 6 year old border collie boy has wee’d on a little female pug before, (his favourite dog, that he goes mad for), now when we meet up we watch him carefully to make sure he doesn’t do it again. I have seen other dogs do it in the dog park when there are a number of dogs there, mainly peeing on legs, but sorry I don’t know why they do it.

Whether or not he’s working is irrelevant to training. All dogs should be trained. And this doesn’t sound like a training issue. It’s likely a behavioural one.

Has he ever been attacked, OP? I’ve known large dogs that cock their leg and submissively wee - the fact the little dog is under them is irrelevant as they’ve already started to respond nervously/submissively and it just so happens that by the time the little dog is under them, they’re weeing.

Thanks for all the replies

He's never been attacked @Killingoffmyflowersonebyone and he's not aggressive to other dogs. He has good recall and is otherwise a well behaved lovely dog.

He loves a good run around on the field chasing his ball and sticks and that's when this may happen ,if another dog goes over to join him, or he goes over to them and cocks his leg up 😬

I just wondered if anyone else has experience of their dog doing this and tips for training him out of it if that's possible. One owner said he is exerting his dominance over her dog

The only real way to control it is to watch for signs and call him away, or keep him on the lead so he can't physically do it.

FuckThePoPo · 17/12/2024 08:18

No advice but I did laugh

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 17/12/2024 08:20

My ddogs’s head gets weed on. He wees on other dogs’ heads. These are usually his pals. They have a habit of wanting to sniff then wee on the same spot so it’s inevitable unless they are all able to perfectly synchronise their sniffs! Could this be happening sometimes?

KeenOtter · 17/12/2024 09:16

It is not dominance although google will probably tell you it is!

Reasons could be:

Marking
A degree of anxiety
Over arousal as in excitement not sexual arousal
Submissive urination

if possible have meetings on a loose lead only 2 seconds meet and greet and move on. Lure away with a treat to keep arousal level down. Get the dog used to meeting and greeting in short bursts and with no excitement level gradually build up to longer meets and greets. Look to see if your dog is more likely to wee on bitches or dogs and build from there.

With a young male lab I would probably go for over arousal and excitement

I have dogs op and I'm afraid i also chuckled when i read your title. I can well imagine the embarrassment but I've not experienced this so I'm of no help.

Edited

Yes this could well be happening

And he is still very excitable by nature, so could be this.

He doesn't appear to have any anxiety and we have had him from a puppy.

He is much loved, I just wish he'd stop pissing people off, literally 😂

I would also go with over excitement .

I used to cross paths with a woman whose labradoodle pee’d on my leg on a couple of occasions.
Each time after he interacted with my own , very calm, male lab. He seemed to adore my dog, then mark on me. I was seriously pissed off 😂 and just avoid her now.

Re the neutering. We left my lab until he was over 3 , on vets advice, as he was not the most confident puppy. We tried the chemical route before the op, so that is something to consider.
