Vets for new puppy

Morning all.

After some advice please.

I have a new puppy who is due his 2nd jabs this week.

My older dog is with a local chain of vets and on their 'dog club' with a monthly fee of £20 (£240 for the year)

This entitles him to ALL his jabs and flea and worming treatment each year.
It also gives him 2 x health checks and 10% of any vet treatment etc.

There's a new independent vets in the area and their charges are as follows: ^

Booster £28
Kennel cough £38 or £28 if at sane time as booster^
^Primary course (1st & 2nd vaccination) £58
2nd vaccination only £38

No price available on their website for flea and worming treatment

My question is do I enrol the puppy in the same club as the older dog with the national chain, or do I choose the independent vets?

Hoping you can help as puppy is due his 2nd jabs this week.

TIA^

Just get his second jab done and work it out later. Ring and ask about parasite treatment.

I've never paid the vet for any kind of flea or worm treatment - we just pay for boosters as and when he needs them. Last lot cost £32.

Check whether the new vets have a similar scheme? Or the price of buying the tablets each month? Until you have this information, difficult to judge. Also, were you happy with availability of appointments at first vet? Will new vets offer good service?

Also, check whether the vets have the same brand of injections as they can vary. We had to return to our breeder’s vets as our local vets didn’t stock them (or start a new course of treatment).

Ps we need a picture of new puppy to be able to fully answer the question. That’s the mn’s rules!

Thanks for all your advice - gonna go with the independent vets as I'd target support a local business than a national chain.

And here's the puppy tax duly paid Smile

Thank you.

Sooo cute!
And fluffy.
And cuddly.
And adorable.

He’s gorgeous, no advice on the vet situation, my puppy is with a national chain because I’ve had problems with a previous pet and the local independent practice.

I use an independent vets and titre test, which tests for immunity annually rather than automatically vaccinating. I never routinely treat for flea or worms, I think it's a waste of money and not in the dog's interests. I keep a close eye on grooming etc. and would obviously treat immediately should a flea appear, but my oldest dog is 9 and it hasn't happened yet. Same for worms - through my vets I send a fecal sample to worm count every 6 months. 9 years on it's never come back positive

Call the vets and see which brand of vaccine they used; if it isn't compatible with the first vaccine, you may need to restart the course, so personally I'd go to whichever vet uses the same one for the vaccine. You can always change afterwards.

I'd also highly recommend having insurance in place before the vet visit as any issues picked up may not be covered in future otherwise.

Most insurance does not kick in until 2 weeks after it is started so you may want to insure in advance or check your policy

Parentswriting · 17/12/2024 21:35

@KeenOtter as I say he's been insured from the day I picked him up at 8 weeks and 1 day old. He is 11 weeks old today so all good Smile
