Pet insurance

Our pet insurance is up for renewal . With our Basset coming up 6 it's ever going up. As he is a Basset it is not a possibility to not have insurance before anyone suggests this (they are prone to back problems in older age)

We are.currently with Many pets they want almost £70 a month
Who else can we approach that doesnt quibble too much if you need to claim.

I used Animal Friends for my last dog and they were excellent whenever I made a claim. I've gone back to them with my recently acquired 8yr old rescue (not made a claim yet), lifetime cover is costing me £23 a month.

Petplan - used them for absolutely years with multiple dogs. Older dogs too as we rescue. Never once had an issue with claiming and also, as they are so reliable, many’s vets will allow a direct claim so you don’t have to find money up front.
It won’t, however, be cheaper.

TeenLifeMum · 14/12/2024 09:34

Pet plan - can’t fault them as they’re currently supporting us with ddog’s chemo. Not cheap but they’re paying out more than we’ve paid in right now.

BlackJacktheDog · 14/12/2024 09:38

To be honest , £70pm for a 6 year old basset in today's world is probably about right for a decent amount of cover.

I'd personally move away from ManyPets because I think they are in increasing trouble. But I wouldn't expect to save much money.

Nap1983 · 14/12/2024 09:45

My many pets has taken s big jump this year, 700 for the my 4 yr old lab, never claimed.
I wasnt aware they were in trouble and will look into other companies, previously used petplan for my horse and they were good.

OldSpeclkledHen · 14/12/2024 13:14

PetPlan. Unfortunately you get what you pay for

Enko · 14/12/2024 13:19

Pet plan is £12 less a month. Also
looking at M&S insurers and Tesco has anyone got any experience with them,

Have you ever had him in the vets for anything other than his injections?

Most companies won't cover pre-existing conditions so you want to be really careful that you don't switch and end up with a massive bill anyway.

mutleyschuckle · 14/12/2024 15:51

Napo offered the same cover as manypets at about the half the price. My springers had £8000 surgery this year & hydrotherapy ongoing & they've not argued any of it. Not looking forward to the renewal price hike in June though.......

mitogoshigg · 14/12/2024 15:57

Tesco was amazing but they won't save you money. Get the lifetime cover. If you have any preexisting conditions you may not be able to change it.

We were paying £180 a month by the end but had 4x our premiums paid over his lifetime paid out so insurance was an amazing deal - I will also add that they were lovely at the end, sending a condolence letter or card (went to ex) and paid for all final costs without deducting (was very reasonable from our vets I should add, and full marks to vets 4 pets compassion as they sent us both a card separately which was well beyond the call of duty!)

doodleygirl · 14/12/2024 15:59

£70 doesn’t sound too much. What type of cover do you have, can you reduce cover amount or excess to lower monthly payments?

user1471446186 · 14/12/2024 16:04

You can try Agria pet insurance and Lloyds bank have just launched with them too

Panicmode1 · 14/12/2024 16:14

I'm with Tesco and they have been outstanding. I'm currently paying £250 a month for my 10 yr old Goldie but she's had a huge litany of claims including cancer, spinal surgery etc etc...so I've claimed a HUGE amount more than I've paid in over the life of the policy.

However, they have just been sold so it remains to be seen if they will remain as excellent as they have been so far.

That's good - you at least have plenty of choice!

We're with Tesco for our 6yo beagle and we pay £57 a month for 10k/year of lifetime cover. No claims yet.

Another vote for Napo we've been v happy with them. 3 year old healthy lab cover £10pm 1st year then £22 now £33. Up to £8k for vet bills and we've had over £2k in explorations/treatment both this year and last year (accident/injury rather than health conditions). Just about to have course of hydrotherapy and they have never quibbled any claims. Excess £85 so we've had far more out than we've paid in.

The free video vet option is great too and has probably saved us even more money.

PieonaBarm · 15/12/2024 02:44

We were with M&S for PieDog they were excellent, paid quickly and no quibbles at all. DDog had lots of health problems at the end and his premium was £240 a month. We were claiming £300 though so it worked out.

Premium only sky rocketed when his health problems started which I would think most insurers would do anyway. Cover was excellent - had the "top" policy as it were and at the time I think it was unlimited

muddyford · 16/12/2024 06:46

Another vote for M&S. Previous two were insured with them, but latest dog we insured with Manypets. But the premium shot up from his first year to second. No claims in that time. They tried to tell me they were paying out more in cruciate ligament claims, but I said in eighteen month old Labs? So it'll be M&S from now on.
