Help please Labrador leaking urine

Out gorgeous girl is nine and was spayed when young. She is occasionally getting up leaving a puddle behind or dripping urine. We have only just realised what has been happening just now. Had been puzzled by the occasional wet leg.

Nothing to say it’s and infection but I will take her to the vet in the morning.

What is this likely to be and is it likely she can have effective medication?

thanks for any experiences or advice

Try to take a urine sample with you as the vet will want to rule out infection. Sphincter mechanism incompetence (weak bladder neck) is common and treatable with either propalin drops or incurin tablets.

RubberDuckyURtheone · 13/12/2024 19:40

This happened to my early spayed labradoodle, felt so sorry for her. It was basically sphincter insufficiency or something along those lines, much more common in early spayed dogs I think. She is on propalin now (syrup twice a day popped on her food) and it entirely fixed the problem. It's meds for life for her but they are easy to administer, not mega expensive and don't seem to have side effects. Breeder spayed her, I was naive and didn't realise the potential implications. (Although I understand there are pros and cons).

My girl was not spayed early and yet still developed incontinence. She's on half an incurin tablet per day and it completely controls it.

My spaniel bitch had this (we think it might have been because she had a litter very young). She was on medication, which worked beautifully.

Thank you so much. She is a sofa cuddler and we want her to be able to continue to be happy and comfortable.

Another propalin success story here. This issue is very common and can be fixed.

Losing weight could help her.

I don't want to cause worry and alarm. But my dog did the same. She had a tumour.
I hope your doggo is ok.

Whilst OPs dog is clearly obese, this isn’t a weight issue.

If every obese dog had bladder control issues then 99% of the dog population would be pissing everywhere

I just know that losing weight myself help my urinary incontinence. Hopefully the OP can find and treat the cause.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking this. While it may not solely be a weight issue, it won't be doing her any favours long-term.

Gosh yes that was the worst photo unflattering should have put my glasses on bad angle and yes she was heavy then - I picked it cause she was smiling 😉 but actually she has had a diet change 12 months ago and lost the weight, is fit as a fiddle and enjoying home cooked meat and veggies daily.

We used a combo of propalin and incurin for my old girl and it sorted the problem out totally

WhichPage · 22/12/2024 08:51

So we did vets last Saturday and took a urine sample. It was fully checked a snazzy machine and declared healthy all clear of anything concerning. physical checks all good too.

While there she was congratulated on how well she looked and her weight.

I have never had a dog who has tended to overweight before.

Anyway she was prescribed the propalin and it was working within hours. Prescribed quantity costs about a pound a day. The vet said the quantity given could be potentially reduced to the minimum effective dose.

Yep. I give the recommended dose for a couple of weeks then reduce. Usually 1/5 of the dose just once a day is fine for a couple of years. As they get older you might have to adjust

TheSillyGoose · 22/12/2024 20:45

Our spaniel has a leaky bladder valve, propalin worked miracles.

Spaying does make them far more likely to experience side effects like these unfortunately.
