Surviving the mud!

I recall last years 10-months of rain in the North with horror. I really enjoy being out with my Weimaraner, but in this weather the pleasure is ruined by the awfulness of cleaning the mud off her after the walk. It has to be done before we come into the house. No downstairs shower at our disposal. It always takes so long, is suprisingly physical and some if the mud is inevitably transferred from her to me 😏

Today was different, I bought her an Equafleece suit. She wore it today and I only had to wash her paws and lower legs. I’ve had my Christmas 😀

I feel that pain. I board dogs and it's very challenging in the mud. At least Weimaraners are relatively easy to hose off. I've got a floofy GSD at the moment who loves mud.

Gigantic woolly, double-coated breed here, we live in the north west and we're sick of rain and mud! We just wait for the dogs to dry then brush out the mucky bits, but the trouble is, in this weather it's an endless cycle, because as soon as they're dry, they need to go out again 🙄With a large heavy coated breed it is difficult dealing with weeks of persistent rain😒

Heavy coated breed here too. Mud dries and she sort of is self cleaning except it falls onto the floor and then silently collects round the edges of the living room rug like detritus on a beach. My house smells of wet dog and wellies. Febreeze has been deployed.

DDog is very fluffy and loves mud. It seems to just drop off him when it dries and then I hoover it up (no carpets)
He would be horrified if I made him wear something like that

I also hate how long it takes to clean the dog, walls and then me. I think I might invest in one, if it’s good as you say it will be so helpful on my working days when time is at a premium in the morning. Thank you for the recommendation.

A gloomy GSD would be soul destroying

Ahh yes, Fabreeze is a friend 😮

Equafleece are expensive compared to other makes, but worth it. She has another one (with short legs) that is 18-years-old. It was made for my previous large dog and regulary worn. It still looks like new! They are so useful because they keep them warm in very cold weather, but also dry, as water just pills on the top. It is also great for drying them because it wicks water from there coat and that pills on top. Add in long legs for mud protection and it’s a genius garment. Equafleece original made stuff for horses, hence the name. I had one for my mare many, many years ago.

You missed out that Equafleece make lots of different fits.
My pointer wears a slim fit and it fits, most dog coats are made for dogs that are a lot more rotund than her.
She's gone to investigate the fallen trees on the bridleway today sans coat, though she may need it a a drying coat when she gets back.

Stickytreacle · 07/12/2024 11:36

I'm an equafleece fan too, although not so good if your horse is bedded on shavings.

I gave up with dogs that love the wet and mud and after our last labradors; I now have a short coated sighthoud, he has twinkle toes that dodge puddles and is a doddle to clean after a walk, although he will lie down in a muddy puddle if he gets too warm. He really feels the cold though and is in an equafleece vest and coat when its really cold.

Good point. My Weinaraner is a 31” slim fit

I do it the other way around to you and put the equafleece on them when they get back muddy. Let them dry with it on and then clean dog no mud and pop equafleece in the wash. Works for double coated collies and wcs. (who just bomb around and get overheated with coats on when running)

In my house the labs seem to be self cleaning. They look covered in mud from the moors then walk them up the lane to the house and are miraculously clean.

Ours are the same, so easy. Occasionally we put a drying coat on after a walk.

Wow! Hard to imagine 🤣
