Stronghold (selamectin) not working :(

GreenTuftyFlowers · 06/12/2024 09:57

Ddog has fleas (I see at least 2 every time I look at her tummy) - she has been recently treated with Stronghold but it doesn't seem to work. She's a poodle cross so it may be that her fur is a cosier home for fleas :/

The last dose was 2 weeks ago and it's supposed to be applied monthly so I don't want to add another dose on top.

Can I use a different treatment alongside? Any recommendations?

Thanks!

We have found spot ons are failing with our dog and cat. I now use Seresto and that works really well. Neither of mine are water lovers though. If they are the collars don't work and chemicals can enter the environment.

Once you see fleas you have a big problem. You need to indorex the house.

Our local vets stopped using the spot-ons a few years ago now and instead we're given tablets for the dogs.

Since they spend a lot of time hanging around in deer-heavy areas, I'm keen to tick-proof them as much as anything. One of them is also a flea-magnet.

Spot on treatments are equally bad for aquatic life! The only stuff that really works and isn't a disaster for waterways is the oral treatments from the vet - Nexguard etc.

Have you repeatedly bathed her? That was my only real way of curing our kittens fleas. Baby shampoo then continuously soap and rinse. Was gross watching them wash away n all the poor blood stained water from all the bites but was def the best method

Spot-ons are pretty rubbish - they wash off easily and there's no guarantee you're getting it on the dog and not all over your hands or on their bed/blankets when they try and rub it off.

I'd ask the vet for tablets.

Thanks all, I didn't know flea tablets were now a thing as our vets always just prescribed spot ons.

I notice that Bob Martin does flea tablets containing Nitenpyram - it will probably be a few days before I can get a vet appt so would be good to try something I can buy tomorrow. Or are these likely to be useless as not from the vet?

She had a bath today - I had a good rake through afterwards and spotted a couple, managed to murder one. They are pretty fast-moving - so obvs not slowed down by the Selamectin, grr.

Luckily she doesn't seem covered in bites or anything - probably won't hurt to keep bathing though.

I wouldn't touch Bob Martin with a bargepole - have a google as to why.

Personally I would wait until you see a vet - and make sure you're treating the house as well as the dog.

Bath conditioner nit comb!

Nexgard sorted out our girl pretty much instantly a couple of years ago when the plague came upon us.

We also had to indorex the house and carpets too though - she was fine but they were biting the hell out of me!

Absolute nightmare, you have my sympathy.
