Best dog food for my allergy-prone Beagle?

SnoringHound · 30/11/2024 13:35

My almost 4 year old Beagle has always suffered with seasonal allergies, but this year, they’ve extended into winter time. Her paws are the main source of discomfort, she’s constantly chewing, biting, or licking at them, to the point they’ve been extensively stained and are basically always red.

She has a medicated allergy shampoo and is on a half tablet of Apoquel a day, but it’s still bothering her so I’m looking at her diet.

Shortly before I noticed her increased allergies, she was on Nadur dog food (Irish brand). It’s grain free, and she was doing well on it until I heard the whole “peas = bad” thing and found there were peas in that food, so I switched to Collard’s. She loved that but her stools were never solid, leading to backed up glands, so I switched her to Burns Sensitive (which our vet agreed was good). Her paws are still acting up though, so I’m not sure where to go from here.

Burns have a Grain Free option, but it contains peas. She’s doing well otherwise on Burns Sensitive, but it probably means lifelong antihistamines (which is fine if need be but for her sake, I’d like to try find something that covers all bases).

Any advice/suggestions are more than welcome!

No help sorry but I do feel for you. Our DDog came to us with what they rescue charity thought were allergies, sore paws abs clay dry sling but with her it turned out to be anxiety and once we fed her regularly and walked her the symptoms went away.

I hope you find an answer soon Flowers

Oh poor pup!! So happy you sorted it out for her ❤️

My own has a bit of separation anxiety (she just always wants to be beside me) but is otherwise very content. Walks well, eats well, plays well. Very social, and just overall a clearly happy dog. Honestly my dog has a better quality of life than I do 🙈🤣

Hi OP - are you a member of Beagle Banter but Better on Facebook?

There's a lady on there who specialises in dog allergies and nutrition and who can do a food/environmental allergy test for you if you'd be interested? I can pass on her Facebook page if you want to know more.

Fellow beagle slave here Grin

allaboutdogfood.co.uk is a great website as you can be really specific and exclude peas as a filter, for example .
Hope your dog feels some improvement soon! My girl is also so itchy .

@SnoringHound her website is https://www.thek9nutritionist.com/ if you want to take a look. I've never used her as luckily our beagle bum has no allergies but I've heard really good things!

We've got a spaniel who can't tolerate
Lamb
Chicken
Beef
Salmon
Grains inc rice
Yeast
Potato
Sweet potato

It is almost impossible to find food and treats that don't contain at least one of those ingredients.

I've done a lot of research and current thinking is this is a result of yeast over growth in his gut

Symptoms are loose stools, pink skin with intense itching

He's been on raw diet for a year which works well although it's hard to get raw with only duck pork or turkey in it.

For treats we are stumped. The treats we gave him have recently changed and now have sweet potato. I'm trying to find some puppy kibble which I can use for training etc

Current thinking is that the vaccinations have caused this. I'm inclined to agree because his sibling had a severe reaction to her 2nd vaccination.

I'm going to go the titration route in future.

I have read that potato and sweet potato feed the bad bacteria (yeast) in his gut.

We have recently started giving him omega oil made from borage (starflower) following a vet recommendation.

We used chicken as a high value reward from the day we got him. Which was giving him belly ache. But we didn't know for months. So all his puppy socialising etc was actually having the opposite effect. He's now reactive to strangers, crowds, dogs on leads, busy places, cafes etc. I am trying to desensitise him now his gut is better.

I will list some resources below but mostly our vet gives good advice and uses an holistic approach

How To Manage Yeast Infection In Dogs

Does your dog have itchy skin? Recurrent hot spots or gunky ears? Does she lick and chew at her feet? Not all skin issues are caused by allergies and in many cases, the cause of your dog's itchy skin can be found in her gut.

This is actually a huge resource for me, thank you! Her recurrent ear infection that’s been undergoing treatment is caused by yeast!

OP posts:

The yeast is candida so I'm going to give him some canestan. I'll report back on whether it works. We're lucky that he's never had ear problems which is unusual for spaniels
