DD and fleas at Uni!

DungareesAndTrombones · 26/11/2024 06:51

DD has been bitten absolutely loads in his Uni house and thinks it's from the cat that lives down the street that often pops into their shared house and has slept in DDs bed. I've advised DD to never let the cat in again, and to Indorex the living fuck out of the house.

Problem is she's coming home at the weekend and we've got a big hairy golden retriever. Will DD bring the fleas back? Will DDog get them? DH is massively attractive to fleas and gets bitten hundreds of times, and I am an anxiety ridden perimenopausal clean freak.

Dog fully up to date with fleas treatment from the vet.

Please help!

Flea your dog before they come. Wash all the clothes they bring, including the ones being worn and the risk is very much reduced.

I’d let the cat in once and deflea it.

Your dd needs to stop letting the cat it. It isn't hers, it probably has a home, and turned out cats seem to come with fleas as standard. If she thinks it's a feral she can take it to a vets and get it scanned and flea treated. I get it though, she is away from home and the cat is probably a huge source of comfort. (My dd and her flatmates have also "adopted" a random cat!l).
If your dog has had a flea treatment from the vet they heshouldn't pick fleas up that your dd might be carrying.
Tell your dh to spray citronella on his legs, just in case, and leave the bags of inevitable washing your dd brings outside before they are washed.

This happened to me at Uni. My flatmates kept letting a stray in, poor thing was riddled with fleas. Had the flat fumigated by the council 3 times and ended up getting cats protection to remove the cat as flatmates who weren't being bitten didn't give a shit. It was so bad you could see the fleas leaping toward hot drinks if you put them on the carpet. I would advise your dd to be very firm with flatmates, tell them she will report to the letting agents if they keep letting the cat in.
