Any vets on here? Antibiotics error

Our dog had an infected paw last week and was given a five day course of antibiotics along with anti-inflammatories to be given until she'd finished the antibiotics. I was away at the end of the week, when the five days was up.

I've realised this morning that there are still tablets here and it's turned out that my husband has been giving the dog pardale v because he thought that was her antibiotics. There are 11 antibiotic tablets left out of 15. She gets her tablets with her 2 meals a day so we can't remember when I last fed her, as that's when she'd last have had antibiotics - possibly as long ago as Wednesday morning but definitely not since Thursday morning.

The dog seems fine, her paw is no longer swollen and she's walking fine on it. Should we start again and finish the course? I'd never stop a course of antibiotics before it was finished but because there's been such a long gap I don't know whether to start it again.

Any vets able to advise please?

Give your vets a ring in the morning - a vet nurse should offer advice for free. No one should be giving medical advice without knowing the dogs full history or seeing the dog (your own vet excluded as they know the dog).

And although we have lots of former (myself included) or current vets on mumsnet, the sort of person who would give medical advice in this situation is 100% someone you shouldn’t trust with your animals asdety

You need to speak the vet who has treated your dog - nobody on here should be giving you medical advice when it comes to prescribed drugs.

OK, thanks. I'm not normally one for asking for medical advice online but I thought this would be a straightforward yes/no. I'll call the vet in the morning. Just worried about the infection having more chance to return in the meantime

I also think you should chat with the vet, but I would be inclined to carry on until they are complete.

I know you said his paw seems okay now though. But my ddog is on long term ab for osteomyelitis. When we finished the first boxes we got I thought we were done with the meds. Went back to vet 2 days after they were finished, and found out that he will be on them for another 2 months. So I asked about the gap, she said it was okay but that we need to carry on.

I know it's not the same situation but my ddog stopped limping after the first course, hence we thinking he was out of the woods, but she said it won't have cleared the infection.

I'm not a vet though so I'm just mentioning this being a dog owner whose boi is on AB.

Your vet should have an emergency number - we can ring at weekends and get free advice over the phone if needed. Why don't you do that?

Our vet has recently outsourced their emergency cover to a vet hospital 40 miles away. I'm not sure how it works now but I doubt they're particularly accommodating. For this and many other reasons we're on the long waiting list for one of the only independent vets left around here.

We used to be able to do vet video calls through our insurance but not sure if they still do it. Baby is having a long nap on me so had planned to look into it this morning but haven't been able to yet!

Ah okay - I would definitely see if you can speak to someone, though it'll probably not make much difference if you have to wait until morning.
