New dog advice

We adopted a Jack Russell Cross terrier from a rescue about 10 days ago. She's four and was, we assume, a lockdown puppy who's not been socialised properly. She a dream in the house, well behaved and is great on the lead but she's scared of her own shadow whilst we are out. We are walking in quiet areas and giving lots of reassurance and praise when due. She passes most dogs really well and has met a few other dogs with disinterest, but about one in 5 dogs she reacts to by barking and lunging with gusto. The previous owners reported this in her so it's not new for us.

We've had dogs before but not experienced this. If this continues we'll consult a behaviouralist via our vet for help and we're reading up on all the right things to do e.g. creating space, high value treats, rewarding when no reaction, staying calm and getting her attention and eye contact etc.

I just wondered if anyone else had been through this and could offer advice or insights. Is there a magic cure (wishful thinking I know). If it was you would you just persist with the gentle, positive actions and think that it's early days? Or do you think we should nip this in the bud as we'll be likely to be doing all the wrong things without help.

I'd really welcome any experiences and advice please.

I'd find a good trainer and go to regular weekly group training classes. My teen dog went a bit like this after her first season, she's calmed down a lot after persisting with group classes. I think it's helping her learn other dogs just aren't worth getting stressed out about

Thanks @Setyoufree

I will do that this coming week.

Good luck! I'm sure with a good trainer and persistence it'll all be fine. Hopefully others with more advice will come along soon
