I have a small yorkiepoo (4.8kg) who is a bit of a princess to say the least, and I’m looking for a warm and waterproof dog coat for the winter, which also covers her tummy as she is not far off the ground and gets cold/wet/filthy.

I have recently tried Equafleece - the sizing is a bit off as she is in between sizes, but I have a tankie for her. They’re meant to be waterproof, but they’re really not, if we go in a field with wet grass it gets soaked through underneath really quickly and I think that makes her colder than not wearing a coat at all. I’ve also tried the 4 legged dog suit but again struggling to get the right size, and it’s either way too big, or I think a bit small for her to be able to walk comfortably. And I guess it’s equally as not waterproof as the tankie, which puts me off paying to get one custom made.

Surely there must be something out there which is waterproof, flexible enough to rampage around fields/woods, warm and covers her tummy? Open to one with legs as long as it’s flexible/comfortable enough. Suggestions very welcome.

I never had a problem with the waterproofness of an equafleece , the outside gets soaked but we always found that our dog was dry and warm underneath . PAH do a 3 peaks waterproof suit if you want a more nylon type .

Have a look at Hurrtta dog coats. I find these brilliant for my dogs they have the Monsoon and Expedition parka’s. Hurrtta have lots of other styles as well. They’re not cheap but mine are over 3 years old and worn and washed regularly and still look like new

Ruffwear might be worth a try. All of my dog's coats and fleeces from there have been great. Not the cheapest option though.

Pomppa Persus dog coats are waterproof and are desiged specifically to allow freedom of movement.

I have this issue too with 2x short legged dogs (mixed breeds Dachshund x and Yorkie x). It's the fact that they are constantly in contact with the wet grass, which is VERY different to being rained on by above, as the latter will run off and not soak the fabric.

I wonder if any of the recommendations from above are specifically for short-legged dogs, as none actually confirm this? (Fingers crossed they are, as also looking for a solution!)

Thanks for replies - I asked on a fb group I’m in and the answer was unanimously Glenndarcy. Ordered one of those today and will see how she gets on, it was reasonably priced too compared to some of the brands.

How did you get on with it? I ordered 2x Double Layer Waterproof McToggins by Glenndarcy for my 2 short-legged dogs. Only one was tested today on my Yorkie Mix. (My measurements were correct for my Dachshund Mix as it fit the body beautifully, but as there was virtually no stretch in the jumper style with no fastenings, it was a real struggle to get on and off him.)

We were on wet grass at the park for about 40 mins this morning. Disappointingly, it failed! Her underneath was cold and very wet as it soaked through both layers.

Hi, mine only arrived a couple of days ago and I’m yet to try it out as we’ve been doing agility and walks that don’t involve getting wet or muddy since it got here. It fits her well but I agree it’s a challenge getting her into it, I wish I’d got the one with poppers now! Will report back once she’s actually worn it out walking.
