Cone of shame alternative - dew claw injury

intergalacticplanetary · 20/11/2024 21:23

Any ideas for an alternative solution to stop my dog licking her injured dew claw?

Cone of shame is not going down well at all.

I've used inflatable collars for other injuries on pets before but she will still be able to reach her front paw with one of those.

She is a nervous dog at the best of times (lurcher) and she seems scared of it.

Any ideas most welcome xx

Hi,I have lurchers and it's a common injury,I just soak the foot in salty water to keep it clean and let the air at it,I don't bother with covering it unless its still bleeding.Yes they will lick it, but after a day or so they stop and it dries up.

Thank you for the reply @FlowerBee62 ☺️

We've had to take the cone off as she was just sitting up and shaking like a leaf. She wouldn't even attempt to lie down.

I was hoping that it wouldn't take too long to heal. X

We had a very very soft flexy cone for our guy after foot surgery because he didn’t take to one before but I did consider a soft muzzle if it didn’t take.

Also is it bandaged that might keep him out if it.

We use the sock of indignation., plus a bit of vet wrap to secure.
Age 2 socks, with a dressing pad underneath if required and a bit of vet wrap at the top to secure.
Dickhead doggy is not much of a chewer but is good at pranging dew claws.

Sock of indignation 😂😂😂

I did wonder whether we could tape a sock over it but DH said Vet said not to cover it and to let the air get to it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Not bandaged as vet said to let air get to it.

Soft cone might be good shout if we need to try another cone 👍☺️

We've had to take the plastic collar off as she was really distressed by it 😢

Toddler socks are quite breathable, don't use longer than necessary.

Dickhead doggy also has a degloving injury (don't google it) earlier this year. We had daily check ups for blood flow and feeling, toddler sock saved the day again. Stupid pointer now owns about two dozen socks.

They won't work for a chewer. Dickhead's best friend would just eat the socks and require surgical extraction.

I tried the soft inflatable cones. Same as the traditional cones, walk into wall twice, stand fridged and cry for an hour.

My dog is a muppet.

Ha ha 🤣

Thanks for the tip. Will give sock a go tomorrow if we need to ☺️

I’ve got an inflatable collar with a plastic bit as well, so sort of half inflatable collar half cone of shame.

My dog is much happier with it, to put it into perspective he can’t pee with a cone on (I mean he could, but he says he can’t) and we were having to hold water up to him to drink it 😐😂 With the new one he can do everything he normally does quite happily.

A towel folded long ways and wrapped round the neck and held on with the collar on top..
Worked for my Jack Russell.
