Toilet training

My 8 month old is pretty good at toiletting - but sometimes does a poo inside after his tea (despite me taking him out a few times.)Problem is that he doesn't bark to be let out and I can't keep the kitchen door open in the winter! How long after they eat do they normally need to do a poo? I don't want this to become a habit and I'm not always in the kitchen all the time at this time of night so can't watch him all the time! Thx

It depends on the dog...
Can you teach them to use a bell to go outside?
Mine are pretty good at this, although there is also a level of abuse as they love playing in the garden or just being outside... especially when the heating is on or neighbours dog barking in the garden!

What time is dinner? Can you shift the time of it or go for a short walk after dinner so he goes then? Or keep him with you after dinner so you can see if he starts to show signs?

Took my dog til she was 13 to start barking if she wanted to go out! My other dog would just quietly paw at the door. I didn't train them to do this, they just did it.
But I think 20 minutes after dinner? I mean mine doesn't now...but perhaps you'll just have to stay out there until they perform and get them used to a phrase (I use 'go on', a friend uses 'be clean') to encourage them.
I had them on a regular routine and my older dog was 100% reliable pretty early on, my younger one about 95%. But it was just consistency - I do remember the frustration of taking them for a decent walk then coming home only for one of them to shortly after need to poo again! But they got there in the end.

My dog stands by the door, when she wants to go out.

After dinner, I suggest you take your dog out every ten minutes. Go out with him, give him a few minutes and then come back in. Do this until he’s been.

Get some doggy doorbells and teach him to ring them every time he goes out for a wee or poo.

None of mine have ever barked to be let out. I take the young one out after supper for a stroll round the block and that usually does the trick.
