Is it time for rainbow bridge?

Hi, my boxer dog is 11 years 9 months old. He is my first dog and never had a senior dog before so I’m unsure if this is normal for a senior dog.

I have been discussing with my husband if it is time for Tyson to go to rainbow bridge but he said he doesn’t want to make the decision and wants me to decide.

My main concerns are that he no longer likes going for walks he will walk 100 yards to the grass to do his business then wants to come home. Occasionally he will stay at the grass and have a wee sniff for 10 mins but does not want to walk any further. He has arthritis and hind leg weakness but he is on medication for this and does not appear to be in pain although I know dogs can hide pain well. He is steady on legs and doesn’t fall. He does walk with a gait though and very slowly.

He is still able to get up and down the stairs but he needs to take his time.

He still enjoys his food/treats and drinks enough water. I have no concerns regarding his weight.

He does sleep a lot. When my husband/kids come home from work/school he is excited but remains in his bed wagging his tail and they have to approach him. Occasionally he will get up to greet them at door but not as often these days.

He still has his eye sight and hearing and he is not incontinent. He will often let me know if he needs toilet by standing at back door.

I sometimes wonder if he is sad and depressed as he stays in bed most of the day. He has no interest in toys no more. He used to love going out on walks or playing with toys but he no longer likes long walks or playing. Some days he will refuse to go out to the grass along the road and will just do toileting in the garden.

I have spoke to my vet about my concerns but he said he is old and is slowing down.

I really don’t know what to do for the best. How did you decide it was time for rainbow bridge?

Thanks

Does he sigh or strain to get up from his bed? Is he still interested in stopping to sniff on walks and smell various things even if the walk itself is shorter? Does he follow you if you're prepping food/snacking/doing other things that he used to be interested in? From what you've said it sounds like he still has a quality of life, but you definitely don't want to wait until he's not eating - that is seriously end game territory.

I have always decided with the thought of I’d rather be a day early than a day late.

as you say, dogs hide pain well, Stirred’s questions are good, what are your thoughts.

I've often made the choice by looking to see if the joy has gone from life, it’s a very hard situation and your DH needs to grow up and join the decision making.

Personally I'd look at getting a medication review before making a decision as sounds like he is in discomfort with arthritis.

Just getting old, I would say. But a medication review would be sensible. From what you have said it doesn't sound like PTS is imminent.

If after a meds review, he isn't improved, I would ask myself, what am I waiting for? That's what I've decided to do with mine.
Obviously we all just want a clear sign but I've decided I'd rather go earlier than later when the time comes.
Don't know how I'll get on of course but that's my thinking.
I don't know if that helps at all. Sadly, it's the best I've got to offer, these decisions are so very hard.
