Limping dog!!

Harvestmoon49 · 13/11/2024 18:43

My dog has just returned from doggy daycare (at my mums!) with a limp. My mum popped out and left her with my dad, when she came home she went a bit bonkers (she absolutely loves my mum) and got the zoomies, which resulted in her spinning in a circle chasing her own tail.
Mum said she suddenly stopped after doing a little yelp and ever since she has been limping Sad
She can walk and can put weight on it. But she's limping and looking sorry for herself.
She's her normal self otherwise and is eating, wagging her tail etc

I thought I'd wait and see how she is in the morning and she's home now and asleep next to me.
I'm not the most experienced dog owner, so just reaching out for reassurance and to anyone who may have experienced something similar?

If she can weightbear, I would just wait and see and don't let her jump or run. If it is no better in a day or two, I would take her to the vet.

I really wouldn't worry tbh - at least not until morning. Try and keep her off it (have her settle and asleep as you say she is) and see how she is in the morning!

Dogs can be incredibly dramatic when they hurt their paws - I used to get a lot of urgent calls about injured paws and about 90% of the time by the time the dog came to see me, it was fine (and owner was incredibly embarrassed)!

Sounds like she twisted it a bit? Have you checked her pads to make sure she didn't step on anything sharp?

survivingunderarock · 13/11/2024 19:19

Weight bearing I would see how she goes. Lead walks only for a week or so then build back up.

Newuser75 · 13/11/2024 20:47

Back leg? Front leg? What kind of dog?

ParanormalNorman · 13/11/2024 20:51

Personally I would see how she is in the morning. If still limping I would get a vet appointment for

a) some painkillers for her
and
b) some manual manipulation to check for things like cruciate ligament or hip problems - hopefully just to rule them out

KeenOtter · 13/11/2024 21:40

If back leg I would be very very careful with her for a few days. A dog can still weight bare if damaged cruciate and you do not want it to tear anymore.

Go carefully for a few days and have lead exercise only (if at all) Twisting can cause some nasty injuries

What breed? I've got a large dog who pulled his leg scraping the ground behind him. It's common and easy enough for them to do. It sounds like something to leave a day or so and check for recovery/vet then. My dog limps regularly since his injury but also walks very well when it suits. I personally think he does it for treats.

She's a Jack Russell/chihuahua cross, so has quite delicate little legs!
It's her front leg and I can't see any obvious swelling and it's not hot.
She's slept most of the evening and has now got up and had a wander round the garden and doesn't seem to be limping anymore?!

There's definitely been a touch of drama, she's got form for melodramatics!!!
