Hit me up with details of tick treatments!!

So for years I've used Advocate, which doesn't protect against ticks. Now have unwittingly moved into a major tick area, we live in the bloody woods FFS, and DDog has had a few ticks, which we've removed with tweezers and added the RSPCA "spot on" tick treatment. So that's two lots of liquids onto back of neck each month, we have to space it out. I've run out of both so thinking I would really like to change to use the one stop tablet - my vet told me about it before I moved and I said nah its ok, I'll stick to the liquid! But no idea which one he recommended.

Not registered with that vet anymore so what are you using for your dogs - do you get a tablet that does everything for them?

bravecto is the tablet that does fleas and ticks

NotYourSaviour · 08/11/2024 19:42

Bravecto. We live out in the sticks and my 4 year old dog has had one tick in his entire life - my 2 year old dog none. Neither have had fleas.

Don't Google it though, that way madness lies. You have to get it from a vet.

Seresto collar

Dearg · 08/11/2024 21:11

Nexguard XL plus 3 month worming tablet.

Tried Bravecto - dog had bad reaction. Tried Seresto - triggered my asthma.

Still found a big fat dead tick in dogs bed last week.

Theoscargoesto · 08/11/2024 21:11

I’d have said Bravecto which has suited both my dogs very well and kept them tick free. They have that every 3 months and milprazon for everything else once a month. But vet has just told me it’s no longer available on the care plan I have so we are moving to something beginning with S that they take monthly and covers fleas ticks and worms save tapeworm, so will have a 6 weekly tapeworm tablet.

Sorry, as I can’t remember its name, that’s probably not terribly helpful….

Probably nexguard spectra - it’s prescription only though.

Seresto collars on mine - though I don’t replace them over winter tbh

But we went from 2 or 3 a week to 1 all summer - ticks not collars obviously 🤣

Seresto collar from April to November

muddyford · 09/11/2024 06:27

Younger dog is on Simparico Trio tablet monthly, for all parasites except tapeworm, for which he has a Droncit tablet every three months. That's on his care plan.

Seresto collars are superb for ticks which my older dog is very prone to collecting. He wears it March to November, never seen a tick

We are in the deer-infested southwest, so ticks are a major issue here.

Thank you all I am watching the replies. Deer!! Couple of weeks ago we came out for a walk about 2pm there's a deer in the car park! All this is new to me and reinforcing my tick worries.

So after DDog got the 3 ticks in the first 2 months, he woke up one morning seemingly not able to wake up, or it was very difficult. He couldn't move himself on the bed, tried to stand/turn over and was holding up a front paw. After an hour he managed to get off the bed unaided for a walk, had a biscuit seemed ok-ish then fell over whilst out - sort of fell forward. He was able to walk fine later, and the next day was 100% himself again and has been ever since. But ... with the temporary lameness, it just seemed to fit Lyme disease and I Know that can be a slow burn coming on some weeks later. Just felt very worried and on alert. Do any of you esp if in rural areas have any experience of Lymes disease? Vet receptionist said it was very unusual even in our area, and dog walker told me she'd never seen a case and she works on farms. Don't know what to make of it? Maybe nothing?

Advantix was my favourite as it stops the ticks attatching.

But our vet changed to Credillo which is a monthly tablet. Ticks can still attach but then die and drop off

tabulahrasa · 09/11/2024 17:54

I’m rural, I get deer on my drive 😐🤣

and I’m from sheep country, so ticks I’m fairly used to… but no, I don’t think I’ve actually ever known anyone/thing with Lyme disease tbh.

Anisty · 09/11/2024 19:03

* It's Credillo Plus that does ticks (and fleas/worms) Credillo does not treat ticks*

Lot of deer round us (Scotland) I do know one person who was off work for ages with Lyme but she eventually fully recovered. She was only early 20s.

And i have had the bullseye rash but I got anti biotics right away.

Best safe than sorry. Lyme can wreck your life.

(I'm thinking of the dog though, not me)

Oh yeah - sorry , i was being a bit thick there. The thing is, Lyme is really difficult to diagnose in humans so i'm not so sure you'd know if your dog had Lyme. The symptoms can take months to appear and are a real vague collection of symptoms.

I bet loads of dogs get it but it's never labelled as Lyme.

IWillAlwaysBeinaClubWithYouin1973 · 09/11/2024 23:14

@Anisty fair point 👍

I second the seresto collar - I have a dog and cat, dog is taken for walks daily in wooded areas. This year was horrendous. Fleas and ticks - so many ticks - also two on the cat! I went through ten cans of indorex, threw away rugs and throws and pet beds and boil washing didn’t seem to work, treated the garden with nematodes, usual flea treatment (advantage?) just seemed to stop working. Vet kept saying to continue with spot ons, After three months I bought a Serrano collar for both girls and within a day the fleas started to die off, within about 7 - 10 days all fleas dead and no more ticks latching on. We haven’t had any issue since. I’m dubious they last a full 8 months though so am now going to replace them over winter. They’ve been on four months and I don’t want to take any chances.

LetsRedecorate · 13/11/2024 23:59

Sorry seresto not Serrano - though the dog would probably prefer a ham collar

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 15/11/2024 00:05

@LetsRedecorate re longevity of Seresto collars: we live in a heavily infested tick area. I've been lax in keeping records of when the collars are due for replacement and I now tend to replace them as soon as I see the first tick. On thinking about it I realise that I've inadvertently got into a cycle of replacing them every spring. So although they're not effective for a full year, if you can get into a cycle of replacing them at the start of the tick season I think you only need 1 collar a year for protection. Just as well considering how much the price has gone up lately.

The price increase has spawned a huge number of fakes, most of which you can't identify unless you actually have the collar and/or the packaging in front of you. If you can stomach the price your vet is obliged to charge, that's probably the safest way to make sure you're getting the genuine article. Otherwise you can buy online from someone who accepts returns and check the packaging out when it arrives. Googling 'fake seresto' or similar will tell you what to look for.
