Do older dogs ever pass away in their sleep?

My lovely dog, now 16 has been having more problems as time goes on. He walks for 20mins max (vet said ko more longer walks a few years ago due to back leg muscle wastage). The last 6 months has taken to weeing in the house several times a day even when he's been out. He throws up every week so changed his food. Drinks a lot of water. He does sleep alot. I hope when his time comes he goes in his sleep - I'm assuming kidney disease- anyone experienced this? 🙁

We were hoping to get another few days with our dog but she was obviously struggling a lot more with her back legs this morning and just kept collapsing after a few steps when helped up although she did manage to stand to eat and then to go into the garden to pee etc. After that though it was obvious she was really struggling. So we have had her put sleep peacefully at home today. She did manage to get up to go to say hello to the vet and then just lay down beside her.

It was calm and peaceful. I think we probably should have done it a week or so ago really but really glad it wasn’t an emergency situation and she wasn’t frightened.

My Grans dog died in his sleep. At least he was sleeping when they went to bed and dead cold when they got up at 7 and he was still in his basket. He looked peaceful. He was very old, 17, but not actually ill.

My dog did. She was old and couldn't walk far, was completely continent and ate well right up to the end but died in her basket one night. Completely unexpectedly. I presume a heart attack as nothing else was wrong with her. A nice way to go I think.

It's very rare according to our vet. Mostly they need to be PTS. Please do the kind thing, don't prolong their pain to delay yours.
