Dog emergency op last night :(

My cavapoo got hold of a cooked lamb shank while I was answering the door last night. I couldn't get it off him and he crunched up the whole thing including bone. I took him to the vet to be safe, they x rayed him and said the shards they could see in his tummy looked sharp and they couldn't make him vomit. So they recommended an operation to remove.

I feel a bit bereft, didn't sleep well at all and am worrying about how to pay the 2.5k bill (he is insured but will have to pay up front). I was also meant to be away on Sat and am not sure that's a good idea. Will he need crate rest? I don't think we even have a crate any more....

Anyone else had to do this and what is recovery usually like? He is 5 so young and strong.

One of my girls had broken glass removed this way. She was very very sore and miserable afterwards. She didn’t need a crate because the soreness kept her from doing anything daft.

Sympathies - dogs do know how to pick the least convenient times.

We have been through two emergency operations to remove an obstruction when ours ate something he shouldn't have. Yes he is so stupid to do it twice.

On the recovery we did have to go back and forth to check on the wound healing with the first having dissolvable stitches but the second they needed removing. We opted for a mattress on the floor in small room to avoid him jumping and moving about much for the healing.

Hope your dog recovers quickly.
