Which breed dog do you have?

We are planning on getting a puppy in Spring and looking at breeds. We love golden retrievers and have the space for a medium-big dog. We also like the idea of cocker spaniels and cockerpoos. There's also a maltipoo in our family that we adore.

We have 2xDC age 8 and 6 and DH works from home every day.

Do NOT get a red or blue carpet with a golden retriever! 🤣

Anisty · 09/11/2024 10:15

Tibetan terrier and Brittany.

Brittany is a pure driven working breed and not suitable for you.

Take a look at Tibetan Terriers though if you like the shaggy dog look.

They are not true terriers and have no terrier characteristics. Low prey drive companion dogs good off lead.

Excellent size.

Not suited to being left in empty house but will settle nicely if your dh is there.

They love company and are the all round little friend. Known at the good luck dog.

They will exercise as little as half hour a day or as long as you like.

Cons

Not suited to boisterous play or children under 5. They are not labs! They will not tolerate kids trying to put clothes on them or tease them. They can be mouthy if over wound. They are totally safe with respectful kids and love to be with kids - but not being chased about and cuddled.

Long double coat needs grooming or kept in puppy clip.

Need to find good breeder as badly bred ones have flooded the market. Make sure parents hip scored. And tested clear for hereditary eye cond i forget the name of.

Tibetan terriers do not shed and are classed as hypoallergenic.

Everyone with kids and dogs please take a look at the above vid.

If you don't like to open links - search "stop the 77" on you tube.

American but such a valuable and powerful little vid about how things your child might do with a dog in play is perceived by the dog - and why kids get bitten by family dogs.

These conversations about Staffies being aggressive are all well and good - but very often it is piss poor ownership that results in particular dog breeds being aggressive (bought by idiots cos it makes them look ‘hard’). The actual problem is humans.

Yes, any dog can become aggressive and yes, piss-poor ownership is a huge problem, but that still doesn't change the fact that, time and time again, it's always the same breeds of dog that come up in articles about fatal attacks on humans.

For me, it's just not a risk I would ever take if I had children in the house. I would just go for one of the hundreds of other breeds that have the same exercise needs or coat types but that have never been responsible for killing a person.

Throwing Picardy Spaniel into the mix...... they're not KC registered but you can find breeders over here who register to the French KC (not sure of the ins and outs) They don't have typical spaniel needs and personalities and are a bit bigger. Lovely family dogs.

No dogs are measuring up to Golden Retrievers for us. Some are coming very close, but I think that's what it'll be. It won't be until Easter, so plenty of time to replace all of our black clothes, get some washable sofa covers and a robot vacuum cleaner...

I'd definitely opt for a show golden over a working line. And invest in some wellies for the puppy stage!

I would recommend ruggable rugs on the wooden floors

Large breed dogs do not do well on slippy floors. You will need carpet or rugs down as suggested above.

You'll need to put rugs down - large dogs can really damage their joints on slippery floors.

Another one saying wooden floors could be an issue for larger dogs. After a fright/slip in the kitchen when he was about 9 months, our Labrador refused to ever come in it again, even when a raw steak was offered which, with a food obsessed lab, how much of an issue they can be.

He wouldn't go in the kitchen or the bedrooms (not a bad thing as kept the bedrooms hair free!), but the rest of the house was mostly carpeted so not an issue for us. We had to put rugs down in the hallway for him.

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 09/11/2024 15:35

Agreed on rugs with wooden floors.

Goldie legs are very spindly and weak when they are puppies (as with most large breeds) - no climbing, jumping, climbing up stairs, standing on their hind legs, chasing balls across wooden floors etc, at least not if you want to avoid serious joint issues later in life.

And not just rugs. You need slip matts underneath to stop the rugs sliding about.

Arran2024 · 09/11/2024 15:38

The only wooden flooring that remotely works is bare floorboards - anythingvelse has limited grip. We put down floors for paws flooring a few years ago - it is still difficult forvour bernese to get a grip and i havevthese throughout the house ruggable.co.uk/?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiArby5BhCDARIsAIJvjIShzjoQ75OK2c5E20RlMA8sQ34DAXHtMRSD1l6tWFSr8vKy6RhVgD4aAsRFEALw_wcB

They look & sound lovely! I've never heard of them. It doesn't seem easy to find pups in the uk though, not that I am ready for another dog yet. My cocker spaniel is 12 so hopefully will have many more years with us, but I have been thinking about what we might get if we get another dog after her

Personally I like Golden Retrievers. I have a Bichon Frise & he is very affectionate. Any reason you're getting a puppy? I have always rescued older dogs, and without exception they have all had basic skills, and exceptional temperaments. If a puppy, just make sure it's a reputable breeder (eg not online, Gumtree etc). There are too many puppy farms and home breeders out for quick money.

HelenaWaiting · 30/06/2025 15:01

Maisie is a cavapoo, perpetually happy-daft and Dora is a lurcher (golden labrador/saluki cross). They adore each other, and us. Here they are having been caught with a stolen blanket.

I have a kangal (anatolian shepherd) but we live on a farm and shes living here best life with our cats. She will be working soon as we have livestock on the way. So not ideal for you! But she has a ton of energy, needs constant attention but is really good with kids. Livestock outside and is basically a huge ring doorbell.

So don't go for anything crossed with her breed as she will destroy anything they can up until about 18 months old. Ours lives outside so minimal incidents. Apart from a dining room chair I left outside over night and forgot about... 🤣
