To rehome an older greyhound?

I’m thinking of rehoming an 8 year old greyhound bitch. She’s lived in a home before but sadly her owner died and she’s back in the rescue she originally came from.
She’s very sweet-tempered and can live with other dogs which is important because I already have a 5 year old terrier cross. My dog is great with other dogs but quite a live wire although calms down after a good walk and is a real snuggle bug.
I’m retired and at home most of the day.
Has anyone got experience of rehoming an older grey? I know I might only have a couple of years with her but would love to give her a happy home.

I was in Aus@oakleaffy but have been in the UK for years. Got talking to a Grey owner this morning and completely won over. The way he gazed up at me with his lovely gentle face, like he couldn’t get enough of me.
Just hope I hear back soon from the rescue.
My house is quite small but it’s just me and my terrier boy and a huge king-size bed and a spare sofa so plenty of chill-out space. Also a small but secure garden. There’s plenty of green space just outside my door.
The way I see it is that I’d want to give her as many happy years as she has left - be it one or be it more.
I love senior dogs and having lost my last boy a couple of years ago, I know it’s an honour to care for them until it’s their time.
It’ll be easier too because she’s house-trained. Watch this space 😊

Oh @OutbackQueen I think we are considering the dog. P S?

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 30/10/2024 17:29

Actually scrap that the one I am looking at is a boy but spitting image.

My dad adopted a greyhound, and they had five very happy years together before my dad died (followed the year after by his dog). Amazing dogs - though at 8 they still have plenty of va va voom so be careful around small furries (dad's dog wore a muzzle if there was a likelihood of coming near any cats) but he was so lovely with any children. Do it!

FlakeyLurker · 30/10/2024 10:38

Do it!

You have another swamp hound! Mine will lie in any body of water/mud!

shellyleppard · 30/10/2024 19:52

@OutbackQueen she's absolutely gorgeous 😍

Hoppinggreen · 30/10/2024 19:55

She is lovely
Please make absolutely sure she is ok with small dogs though, a neighbour rehomed a Greyhound and they were told to be careful with cats but it was fine with all other dogs and children. The first time it met a small dog it tried to kill it, no growling or anything just grabbed it by the scruff of its neck and shook it.
Luckily the small dog survived but the Grey had to be muzzled for a long time afterwards and was very very nervy after that. She loves my big dog and is very sweet but can't be allowed near smaller ones again just in case

OutbackQueen · 30/10/2024 21:01

I think that will be key @Hoppinggreen. My dog is small so we’ll just have to see what happens if/when the rescue facilitates a meet. 🤞

I do hope your application is successful, OP.

Greyhounds are wonderful.

8+ can be prone to joint issues, teeth issues and corns but apart from that they're pretty robust.

LadyGrillingSole · 31/10/2024 13:21

We have two "middle aged" rescue greys, there's not been a day they've not made us smile 😊

Our big boy was attacked by a ( presumably unstable, verging on totally batshit?! ) cat on his walk with dh once! He caught it when it leapt at his face, stood with it in his mouth, giving dh the " waddoIdoooo, dad???" look 😮
Dh told him to drop it, which he did. The cat ran off, turning around to give our boy the stink eye a couple of times 😂

Honestly, we're like a sight hound cult since we adopted our two, they just have so much personality, sweetness and love. They're the best!😎

UtterlyButterly2048 · 31/10/2024 13:31

We’ve had 5. All lovely dogs, lived to decent ages (oldest was 14) and pretty healthy. All lived very happily alongside our smaller dogs and with time built up stamina to go for longer walks rather than short (mental, with alien legs flying everywhere 🤣🤣) sprints. I hope you get her, I love a pointy nose! 🥰🥰

OutbackQueen · 31/10/2024 16:14

Good to know yours coexisted peacefully with your littles @UtterlyButterly2048

My elderly aunt adopted the most beautiful, gentle greyhound girl aged 6. Aunt was about 75 then but dog was happy with two short walks a day. Dog died 6 years later, followed 6 months later by aunt. I would have definitely taken on dog if aunt had died first. They were so ideally suited.

Letsgoforaskip · 31/10/2024 22:55

I lost my 12 year old greyhound this summer. He was good with all other dogs - my neighbour’s tiny terrier used to jump up to lick his head! We used to stay with my mother in central London and he was unphased by anything apart from two tiny chihuahuas on bright pink leads - I think he thought they were an alien species! He showed no aggression but was very wary.
He was the easiest dog I ever had and very loving and happy.
I hope it goes well for you OP.

OutbackQueen · 01/11/2024 16:24

I’m very sorry for your loss and thank you for the words of encouragement.

I would love a gray .
But I've two tiny terrors ( dogs)
So not ideal
Following to see photos of when you get her x

Vicliz24 · 01/11/2024 16:42

I've got a whippet and a terrier. Provided yours get on do it !! Pointy dogs are so incredibly lovely . Lazy cat dogs we call them . My whippet sits and watched my terrier running around with a face that says stuff that . Spare sofa is a great idea . Such gentle loving dogs .

christmascalypso · 28/11/2024 20:25

@OutbackQueen
Did you rehome her in the end? 🤞🤞

Thatwouldbeme · 28/11/2024 20:29

Oh I'm invested now, did you get her 😁
