Question about a dog at the house I'm babysitting

I've never had a dog, I'm currently babysitting for a 2 year old for the evening. They have a big dog, she is a border collie.

Now I don't know much about dogs but I can't relax- she's following me about with her ears back and panting and making breathy squeaky noises as she pants. She's clearly not relaxed, won't take her eyes off my or the little one I'm looking after. I've put the little one to bed, and I'm sat at the end of the cot on a chair reading my kindle until she falls asleep. Dog staring at me continually, occasionally looking at the door. I tried to find some dog treats or something to show her I'm nice but no luck.

Any advice for how I can make her relax, and is she about to eat me? Joking. Sort of.

Typical collie behaviour. Does she have a dog bed? I would get her to go to her bed - put a treat in it if necessary to get her there.

Ask her to stay shut the door and let her chill.

This sounds quite typical for a Border Collie, they can be quite intense!

Can you put her in another room? I highly doubt she is going to attack you but you can try to reassure her a bit, good girl, it's ok etc in a low, calm voice. Don't stare her in the eyes and just try to be as relaxed as you can.

This really. Ideally put her in another room. If it’s not possible then completely disengage with her. Don’t talk to her or even look at her, stop bribing her with treats. Just pretend she isnt there

The dog sounds stressed, and border collie a are intense by nature. You are in her home looking after "her kid" and she doesn't know you, so she's keeping an eye on you. Did the owner's give you any instructions? If not I'd just try to keep things calm and quiet, don't try to pet or otherwise handle her and speak in low soothing tones avoiding eye contact.

Does she need to go out to toilet?? My dog although not a collie would do this if she needed to go

quirkyquerty · 26/10/2024 19:42

Thank you. I've sat reading my book and stopped speaking to her and the little one who is going to sleep, and she's laying in the floor asleep with eyes closed, so I'm happy! Will follow all advice here; thank you!

I have a spaniel that does this when she wants something. Toilet, a fuss, a ball thrown, food. She'll stand and stare at us and follow us around then stand still and stare some more. Collies are x10 the intensity of a spaniel so I can imagine it's quite offputting!

Sounds like a typical collie, she isn't being aggressive she is just making sure the baby is ok and sounds like she is quite anxious!
Just talk to her calmly, stroke her if she lets you, be gentle
