Dog Teeth Cleaning

Hello I've taken on a rescue dog, 6 years old, and have realised her back teeth are manky, which is causing bad breath.
Has anyone had success treating this at home? I'd rather not have her anaesthetised more than necessary; she'll be spayed soon and it can't be done at the same time.
Any advice appreciated.

We brush our 6 year old dogs teeth everyday to try and keep the teeth as good as we possibly can, but if there’s a really bad build up of tartar and plaque you may need it get teeth professionally cleaned by vets first, then you can continue with maintaining clean teeth. Why won’t the vet clean them whilst she is being spayed. This is what we use.

Thanks @Mindymomo
There's a risk from plaque while she's under. Can't remember exactly what. She's a French bulldog so has a compromised respiratory system already.
She's having vaccinations in a few weeks so I'll see what they say then.

If she already has bad teeth then she needs a dental - you won't be able to treat it at home.

IME resign yourself to vet cleaning under anaesthetic every 2 / 3 years.

Had my dog's teeth cleaned whilst he was having a lump off.

Kept on top it it since by daily brushing. But if there's already plaque or decay, needs proper cleaning first.

I've also recently taken on a rescue who is 8. I took her to the vet for a once over and she has to have teeth removed.

I had an appointment booked for tomorrow but was worried about the cost (her insurance doesn't cover dental because of her age) and the vet has suggested a local charity may be able to help towards it.

In short, when it gets to the stage of 'manky', the vet is your only option, really.

My spaniel gets their teeth cleaned at the groomers about three times a year. The vet is very happy with the dog's teeth. Vet also offers teeth cleaning for £10 and can sedate if necessary. Hopefully you might be able to access something similar to maintain your dog's teeth.

The kind of cleaning offered by a groomer (EnmiPet and similar) is only superficial - it's fine as maintenance for dogs who already have good teeth but plaque build-up can only be removed properly under anaesthetic by a vet.

@coffeesaveslives thank you, that makes a lot of sense. Dog has been having teeth cleaning since they were about a year old.

Thanks for all the comments.
I'll get the vet to have a proper look. Hopefully her bad breath will be cured by sorting the teeth.
